Donek has some nice boards.
All the boards I have owned before - there was never any mention of stiffness. The all felt about the same. What does increased stiffness of the board do for ones boarding performance? I am leaning towards something like a carving board - but that that hardcore - anything like that in a soft boot? Board? Brand? Thanks for all the input! Tmuld |

hardcore - anything like that in a soft boot? Board? Brand? In other words, you want a board that is wide enough for soft boots but is optimized for carving, right? My recommendation from first-hand experience would be the Donek Incline or Wide depending on your foot size and preferred stance angles. Other choices that I haven't tried, but are among the favorites of people who use both hard and soft boots - these are all European brands: -Rad-Air Tanker, especially if you want a big board -Rad-Air LSD -F2 Eliminator or Eliminator LTD -Voelkl Cross or Voelkl Coal. The Cross is no longer mad but you might find it used. Another choice that is not really on the market yet would be the Madd BX 168. Madd's website is www.maddmikes.com. You can find much discussion about Madd on the www.bomberonline.com forums; the good (boards hold an edge like crazy) and the bad (they are back from a long hiatus, and their 1st production run had some quality issues). I have the Madd 170 and it's a very light, very grippy, fun carving board... probably a little soft for a guy my weight (195 pounds / ~89 kg), as it tends to get squirrelly if I point it downhill rather than carve a tight arc. IMHO you cannot beat the price / performance tradeoff with the Donek Wide and Incline. I have the Wide in a 161 and an older Incline in a 168, and greatly enjoy both of them. I have not ridden a soft-boot board that I like better than that Wide 161. Mike T |

It mainly allows you to set an edge and hold it at speed in a hard turn, where a softer board would fold up and lose the edge. Again, not a softie rider here but the high end Salomon boots keep getting mentioned (the old Malamute), along with some of the stiffer Burtons. They usually get paired with a stiff binding like the Nidecker Carbon 900, Catek Freeride or some of the high end Flows. The previously mentioned Donek Incline is among the usual suspects for softie carving, as is the stiffer Salomons (Forecast?), the Palmer Carbon Circle, Rad-Air Tanker or Leto, Prior MFR and a few others. wider turns). The MFR 158 was a lot more fun in the powder - although again I suspect the Wide and Phoenix in particular would be a better matchup. Both boards are very nice... although the Donek are more affordable (and you can get free demos). Hello Arvin, Sorry to hijack this thread, but I have some questions. Did you demo a Phoenix? Just got back from a Boradercross and have some performance concerns. Thanx! Chris Hi Chris, I have not demo a Phoenix yet. I'm just extrapolating based on my experiences with the Incline and what it would be like if it was slightly wider, and a bit softer. My guess is that the Incline would be better for boardercross than the Phoenix as the Phoenix is much softer and so probably can't hold a line as well as the Incline at higher speeds - but you should ask Sean Martin about that more than me. P.S. Let me know if you want an Incline 155 (I might consider trading it plus cash for a Phoenix 155). |
