World Cup GS
Well done to Chemmy Alcott who got her first World Cup points finishing 25th
in Solden. Only just out of the Juniors, just 21, there's hope for British skiing while we wait for Alain Baxter to get back where he belongs (only 51st today, terrible start number). Pete |

Pete I heard it was a first for a British woman on the WC tour, according to Radio 5 anyway. Imagine, skiing results on radio football on a day when there's not only football but also rugby as well, hopefully there'll be a bit more reporting as the season progresses. -- James... http://www.jameshart.co.uk/ |

They have forgotten Emma Carrick Anderson, just retired, but who as a 16 yr old managed 8th in the combined in Albertville ('92), and scored several top thirty WC finishes during her career, including 5 during the 99/00 season. Thanks to the media most people have never heard of her. Like most successful Brit competition skiers on the circuit she went to a ski-study school in the Alps (Austria). Pete |

Don't forget her astonishing performance in the olympics, where she was the only woman in all 5 alpine events and got a best of 13th in the combined. Not too shabby at all. But yes, I'm also very pleased for her, and will continue to follow her fortunes closely. And just for my own ego-massaging, can I just point out that the first (and only) ski race I've ever won (in Flaine) was opened by Chemmy, who also gave out the prizes, and that I've skiied with her there a couple of time since? No, there isn't time? Oh, in that case I won't. Only just out of the Juniors, just 21, there's hope for British skiing while we wait for Alain Baxter to get back where he belongs (only 51st today, terrible start number). I've only met him the once, but he seemed like a really nice guy, so his misfortunes last year were very, er, unfortunate. Not sure he'll make it back up to the top rank, but here's hoping... -- Ace (bruce dot rogers at roche dot com) Ski Club of Great Britain - http://www.skiclub.co.uk All opinions expressed are personal and in no way represent those of the Ski Club. |

Did an article on her last year, met her in Pitztal at the British Juniors where she took my daughter down for the course inspection (fortunately, as any advice I give in that capacity usually gets dismissed as coming from skiing's equivalent of Eddy the Eagle.) To be fair on Radio 5, in the report I heard it said a first in GS. Nice to see a Brit do so well in what is the most competitive discipline. Nick |
