He must have gone to Europe again. Specifically the UK. Because I

Then you immerse it in water. My mother made all manner of steamed puds,
including spotted dick. Then her lid began to leak so we got her a new one.
If you're fancy, you tie on a bit of greaseproof paper with string before
clamping down the lid.

I suspect Scottie is busy wondering why he called a woman of more than
average height, and weighing 134 lb "fat". I'd be calling her a stick insect
myself. Evidently anything BUT fat.
Probably never eats Spotted Dick.
