Uhm, your news server can be independent of your ISP.
Go shopping, sign on and enjoy. This Google stuff for
USENET it a little ungainly at best.

Yup, but I can access it at work (strictly on on my own time and on a
non-interference basis, of course) and at home with Google. When I
signed on with my current ISP at home, I played around with a couple of
the free news servers (can't recall which ones) but never got any of
them fully functional. Probably my fault, but it wasn't (and currently
isn't) worth my time right now to figure out what was wrong. Google is
definitely ungainly, but I'm used to being frustrated. After all, I'm
a snow skier living in Texas...

Yeppers. I spend a few extra bucks a month to have a Supernews
account. Been damn happy with them. I took one look at the
giganews I can use for "free" with my Comcast cable acct. Pretty
much didn't want to use giganews. Ya get what ya pay for!

But E10 a year still seems reasonable. Domestic commercial news servers
are running about $15/ month I think. Anyone else know of a good,
free, reliable news server?

But I don't have any Euros.

I'll take a look.

I've heard good things about a particular server, but can't recall the

exact
name. individ-something.

That's the one that is not going to be free for much longer, and the one
a lot of us use.

I opened an account to use when I am not at home and can't use the "free"
newsreader account bundled with the cable modem service.

Have tried the new google groups beta version?

http://groups-beta.google.com

It seems to be a bit less ungainly.

That's what I'm using now, but it is still somewhat squirrely. I
usually have to manually include the post to which I'm responding, and
then have to do quite a bit of editing for format, etc. Even then, it
still screws up sometimes even if I preview it first.

I've heard from a number of people who were billed just fine in US dollars.
At current exchange rates it's a little over $13 for a year.

Strange... works fine for me. Are you clicking on the "Reply" link
below the message? That one simply opens a blank window where you have
to include the text from the previous post yourself with copy/paste.

Click on the "Show Options" link next to the name and date at the top
of the post and then click on reply from there. That one automatically
includes the text of the post you're replying to and seems to work just
fine when I hit the "Post Message" button.

I know it's not as good as a full-featured news reader but it's handy
when all you have is web access... like behind a firewall at work where
they might be blocking port 119 and/or NNTP protocol access to your
regular news server.

Oh yeah, I thought I remembered using that option before. Now if it'll
stop messing with the line-wrapping....
