Default Long climbs in NJ revisited

Following up on my recent question about climb training in NJ as I
tried to scope out a couple of options. Part of the goal here is to
see if I am even remotely ready for the "climb to the castle" at
Whiteface (not the race, just going at my own pace).

So, Sunrise Mountain road in northern NJ was mentioned here as a long
sustained climb. From the terrain map on Google and a youtube
windshield cam video, it looks pretty flat though. As for Fiddlers
Elbow, while plenty steep, it is also kind of short (under 3 miles). I
have no doubt that both are useful for training, just trying to see
what’s what before making a 2-hr drive up there.

Sunrise is highly recommended. Yes, it's not super steep, but it's well worth the drive. You can use speed reducers if it's too easy for you. Also, it can be skied downhill with some practice. Also, it's one-way going up, so, cars are not as scary (but you have to ski against traffic going down). I did pretty well at hill climb rollerski races after training at SRM every weekend for one summer. May be I can make the drive there one day (t's been ~10 years since I skied it) when I am in the area.

BTW where are you driving from? I can introduce you to a nice climb near Frederick, MD - you won't be disappointed .

Thanks for your reply. Advice well taken. Will need to pick a weekend when it's not brutally hot and humid (the drive up there will rob me of the precious morning coolness).

A search of this group turned up a similar thread from ~10 years ago with Sunrise mentioned and also Montana rd (Google shows it in Washington twp, NJ between 78 and 80). Any thoughts on that one? Seems like a nice 6 mi stretch and a somewhat shorter drive.

I live near Princeton, NJ. There are actually some areas that are pretty hilly around here. Problem is, the hills are kind of short and there's traffic. Last fall I found a "road less traveled" within about 25 min drive that has a short steep section and a more gradual but sustained 0.7 mi climb that is suitable for repeats. After only a few outings there I saw a pretty big improvement on snow.

I may take you up on that climb in MD when I'm in the area!

I used to live in Piscataway, and my fav spot was in Far Hills, NJ (Lake Rd), it was only 20 min for me. There is one super steep hill off Lake Rd(Pennbrook Rd), although it's not very long. Still, saved me extra hr of driving.

Haven't skied there in 10 years though.

Never been to Montana Rd.

If you are northern NJ, check out 7 Lakes Drive in Harriman State Park, NY
Tiorati Brook Road (shorter)

Looks beautiful. And long. Does it require car support for descent or is it skiable the whole stretch?

Thanks,

Larry
