ski advice
Hi,
I have the option of getting some new k2 sweet luv skis for the GF for 200 UKpounds. She's had a few (ca 5) weeks skiing and isn't really getting much faster (and doesn't have the desire to - can parralel ski on easy blues but not really carving) and so I think these or similar would OK for a few years. My concern is that they may be a little too short (or flexible) for her. She is 5'5'' and inaddittion quite heavy (170lbs). Size guides I have seen suggest a 155cm ski but these are only 149cm. Do you guys think the 6cm will make much difference? Any other thoughts/recommendations? I have asked what she thought of the skis she's used, but she can't remember. Cheers Jim |

Cheers Jim Jim, Have you bought her boots yet? A far more valuable purchase than skis are a pair of appropriate, good fitting ski boots. Then rentals become cheaper and you can wait until she tells you what length she wants AND get in on other end-of-year sales. Get the boots and you'll still get a good deal on skis. |

And don;t get the cheap boots with very little forward lean. They make it very difficult to bend the knees without sitting back. |

Those skis are already a soft ski; overpowering them will demolish any performance they might have. You say 200 UKPounds, which IIRC is neighborhood of $400? Your market is certainly different than ours, but around here that would be a bit pricey. It might save you money AND result in a more appropriate ski to keep shopping. But the boot advice is paramount - make sure she's fitted with her own properly fitted boots before buying skis - boots before skis always. |

Pound vs dollar is more like 1.5 so $300, anyway renting in europe isn't cheap ($140 per week for top range or $100 for basic). She has boots already. I'm guessing pretty much any hire ski would be over powered (at less than head height). I did wonder about getting a pair of second hand racetiger rc's or similar and seeing how she got on - which I could also play on if it didn't work out (say 158cm). I'm kind of the opinion that it wouldn't, but from what you say I should be on the look out for a stiffer ski than her ability alone would suggest? Presumably there not going to be alot of advantage in a female specific ski as she outside the design spec of the ski anyway. |
