I realise I'm the new guy in these parts...
The Real Bev wrote:
Sorry to say it's broken. No idea why or how to fix it and I was a moderator a while back and couldn't even get MY messages posted. Somebody else is doing it now, so I guess I'm not the only one who can't fix it. Last message was May 2014, only the second message this year. It has been very broken for a while. With all this noise on this one any accidentally posted skiing related content will get trashed. Going to get seasonal rentals for my son this weekend. And the global warming people have caused a massive traffic jam in NYC, and that will contribute to the problem. |

Usenet has been dying for years, besides ISPs have stop support it, with Verizon as one of many ISPs that don't offer it anymore. Social Media sites are much easier to post photos, videos and messages than Usenet. If everyone still had 15k dial up modems, Usenet would be king. The miracle and bane of technology, change has much more rapidly, and leaving those systems obsolete in the dust. Usenet works. Web sites are a pain in the ass. Every site requires that you register to post, and every site has it's own web page that you have to go to individually, log in to separately, and few have any way to easily tell what messages are new to you. I can glance at my newsreader and instantly tell which subjects have new messages I might be interested in. I can very quickly access and perhaps respond to those messages. Many websites have very low usage, so who would ever remember to check them for new posts. Usenet make that easy. Photos and videos are their own problem. 2 years later, they are likely gone anyway on many sites, leaving the answers they are attached to meaningless. I occasionally use website forums to find info. I rarely will take the time to register with a site to post a response. Never any such problems with usenet. How many websites do you want to sign up for. And nothing compares with the instant response capabilities of usenet. Unfortunately, the moderated version of this group is uselessly disfunctional. |

Every site requires that you register to post, and every site has it's own web page that you have to go to individually, log in to separately, and few have any way to easily tell what messages are new to you. And they demand passwords. I've got a multi-page text file of my passwords for various sites, even though I tend to use the same ones for sites where I really don't care about "security". Some of the assholes even want capital letters and numbers as if the site was actually important. I can glance at my newsreader and instantly tell which subjects have new messages I might be interested in. I can very quickly access and perhaps respond to those messages. I bother to register if I need additional information or want to offer some. Unfortunately, the moderated version of this group is uselessly disfunctional. It worked for a while, but then something changed and some stuff didn't work and then NOTHING worked. I don't know if it's the robomod software or the server that carried the group. I don't know why some people could post and others couldn't, although I had created a long 'approved' list. A killfile solves the biggest problem, but it doesn't lure former members back. -- Cheers, Bev ================================================== Segal's Law: A man with one watch knows the time. I regularly communicate on (more than) 5 web-based forum-style discussion groups. They all recognize me when I log in (from cookies, I suppose) except from my half-crippled HP Mini that only operates from Safe Mode now. All of them, once logged in, have an option that shows the latest posts and those I have not yet read, although they all do it differently and to varying degrees of complication. And since my access to RSA has been through google groups for the last few years, even RSA fits in that mold. As for moderation, the soccer referees forum (I am not a referee, but I am interested in their discussions) has seriously-regimented moderation as a matter of course, such as this posted today by a moderator - "I'm not going up and bothering to edit anything, but from here on out everything in this thread is about the refereeing performance in the Manchester United v Leicester City game from this weekend or it gets deleted without warning." |

Anyway here's the lay of the land: http://xkcd.com/802_large/ It's a map of online communities circa 2010, scaled according to usage. Usenet is still there! But I'm sure it's changed since then and usenet is even smaller. See if you can find it - think of it as a "Where's Walt" puzzle and invite your friends. //Walt |

So in your ideal world, all posts that threaten my life, or call me a child molester, or try to use my little doggie as ammo would be immediately deleted? Shame it didn't work that way on rsa.terrorist, as Thompson called me a child molester on several occasions and never got censored. You can point this out, can you? I'll bet that any reference to you being blown off by SPD would be banned, eh? CONTACT INFO! FORM EMAIL!! |
