Where to go to ski/work/live for a season?
In other words, where would you guys go to be a "ski-bum"?
Here's what I'm looking for, prioritized: 1. I don't have a car, thus I would pretty much need a place that is self-sustaining/contained, or has reliable and cheap public transport to the nearest town/city. Consequently I'm imagining a place that has a village or town at the base. 2. A place that doesn't necessarily require a work visa, or some place that it isn't difficult to acquire the necessary paperwork (I'm an American). 3. Somewhere out west, as I've spent 95% of my life in the New York Metro area. That's it. I do of course have more issues and priorities, but I want to encourage discussion, not stifle it. I really appreciate any feedback. Thanks! ~ellis |

To really get the skiing in, a job at Alta would get you the "truest" ski bum experience. It's pretty hard to live cheaply and live the ski bum life of yesteryear in today's resort towns. At Alta you're not going to make a bunch of money but you will get some skiing in. pigo |

Mike is right, there are two or three bus routes that serve Alta/Snowbird and the lower valley. There is inexpensive housing along the route. Yo can't beat it and of course, there is world class skiing.

So far, SLC and Utah seem to be where all the people trapped there think you should go. I'm trapped in Seattle. Telluride, Crested Butte, and Steamboat in Colorado come to mind. Small towns with real people, transportation systems, grocery stores, lots of cultural activities, and fine ski areas. But tough to make the rent for a ski bum with no car. Big Mountain, and maybe Big Sky/Bridger in Montana. Sun Valley would work too. Not last year. Somebody from California oughtta be able to suggest something there. Utah does get snow, but it's still Utah. Doesn't matter if you're there to ski. -- Mike Treseler |

In article , Mike Treseler had
this to say about that... Jack Nixon wrote: So far, SLC and Utah seem to be where all the people trapped there think you should go. I'm trapped in Seattle. What about Mt Baker? Glacier or whatever, where does their staff live? Telluride, Crested Butte, and Steamboat in Colorado come to mind. "real people"?????????????? Bwaaaaaaahahahahahaha. Maybe at some of the small places. But not at the three you mentioned in Co. |

The "cultural activities" are imported to entertain the UNREAL people who swamp your small town every winter and summer. And small town "transportation systems" are PICKUP trucks. Lots of pickup trucks. c.f. Truckee, Ca. |
