Default time to visit south NY to ski now

I you live in the Adirondacks or Vermont or western Massachusetts, and want
the joy of skiing in wonderful places, now is the time to drive South.
South for a weekend in the Gunks, the Shawangunk ridge by New Paltz at exit
18 on the New York Thruway.

Or if you got some excuse to fly to New York City like a business trip or
some frequent-flyer mileage to use with sightseeing and shopping, now's the
time to combine it with special skiing.

Two of the Top 10 prettiest ski tours in eastern North America:
* Mohonk Mountain House: Rhododendron Bridge - Laurel Ledges - Humpty
Dumpty - Woodland - Skytop. Just skated it myself, and I'm going back to do
it again on Saturday. (and I like to include Kleine Kill and Oakwood in a
big loop, and Eagle Cliffs has great views too). Some photos:
http://roberts-1.com/hvski/xc/mohonk/v (but I need to add some photos of the
wonderful rocks on Laurel Ledges - Humpty Dumpty)

* Minnewaska State Park: Upper Awosting - Castle Point loop. Just skated it
myself. (and if have more endurance and classic skis, around Lake Awosting).

Mohonk usually has better grooming, and some of the prettiest places in
Minnewaska are gentle-backcountry classic, so for two-technique folks, I
suggest skate Mohonk on Saturday, classic Minnewaska Sunday. If a third day
for skating then make it Mohonk, or if a third day for gentle-backcountry
classic than make it north Manhattan island (and be ready with kicker skins
or klister). Manhattan tour:

Lodging: If you got the bucks for something really special, stay at Mohonk
Mountain House. Otherwise can do a web search for lodging in New Paltz (or
other towns near the skiing are High Falls and Kerhonkson).

Yes there's other worthwhile places to ski in southern New York -- like
Fahnestock Winter Park (http://roberts-1.com/fwp) -- a good nearby resource
for people living in the metro NYC area.

But I don't feel those other places have much unique to offer for people
coming from good cross-country skiing regions like the Adirondacks or
Vermont.
