Did my MCL one year second week of December. I feel your pain. mg Thanks. The hell of it is: I don't actually *feel* very injured! Hmmm! No pain, no incidental injury (usually). ACL is pretty much a no pain injury. There may be some pain while the injury is swollen, but before and after there is usually no pain with an ACL tear. It may well be that the ACL is the ONLY injury. Good-o if so. My left knee (the one with no ACL) gives almost no trouble (at my slightly overweight pressure on my knees). My right knee which I very slightly injured in High School, gives me a bit of grief now and then (weather, you know) but is whole and complete with just maybe a few rough edges. As for surgery or no surgery, A friend tore her ACL in the same year as I tore mine. She was advised the same as me. She is a physical therapist working with geriatric patients. She needs to do a lot of lifting because of the population she works with. Her knee buckled during work once and she (a year after the injury) immediately had the surgery. There was a mild complication during the surgery involving nerve damage. She, when skiing, cannot feel the condition of her knee and so wears a knee brace just so she can determine what attitude her knee is relative to flexed or straight. Otherwise she is fine. Let's see, if you don't have the surgery now, let the injury heal (as long as the doc says the knee is stable), there is a chance of unusual wear on the joint itself, causing premature failure of the joint requiring replacement. I have several friends who ski (very well) on bionic knees and bionic hips. Their reasons for replacement range from sports injuries to plain old arthritis which may be what I'm in for in 10 or so years. Skiing over 70? Yeah, mon! Take a gander at Saudan in the latest 'Powder'. Do what is best for you now and let the future take care of itself. |

That's nice to know, there are other really stupid people in Jackson. Ya know if you actually had a job with benefits, you could actually get the thing repaired. Medicaid doesn't cover ACL's, does it? How does it feel to be such a total stupid loser with no major medical? |

Welcome to the club. *Assuming you have the surgery (I went with the hamstring autograft) and do the proper rehab, your new knew is likely to be stronger than your other knee six months later. *At least, that's how mine went. *Once I slacked off post-rehab, the new knee took a few months to regress to the same strength as the non-injured knee. *Other than some minor irritation due to torn cartilege sustained in the same fall, I haven't had any problems. *I tore my in March 99, had the surgery three weeks later, and hit the slopes again the following January. *I resumed volleyball at a little under 6 months post-op. *Good luck. Thanks. I'm waiting to get in with the specialist (who'll probably order up an MRI), but from what I'm hearing -- including from the assistant director at my ski school (i.e. my boss), the surgery does sound like the way to go. She agrees with you that her grafted knee is probably stronger than her original equipment. Let us know which type of graft your surgeon decides to use. I got the hamstring graft since I already had problems with chondromalacia (improper tracking of the patella) rather than the more popular patellar tendon graft. Get used to the idea of doing lots of stretching. Lots and lots of stretching. Tendonitis is a common side effect and stretching is your best way to head it off. |
