Yeah, there are no stupid, inexperienced skiiers out on the trails,
only stupid, inexperienced snowboarders....

Your fault. Boarder had right of way. Did YOU apologize?

What was he thinking ? How dare he assume that someone from behind that's
passing him should be in control and avoid running into him ?

You should have went to the nearest patroller and had his lift ticket
taken away (would have been hilarious to see the result once you explained the
situation to the patroller after you plowed into someone else from behind).

(sarcasm off)

A lesson learned for you; not everyone does the point and shoot straight
down all the time; some people do make turns. Don't pass someone in a very
tight spot with no way out, the space may disappear.

Although he did merge into a trail without looking, I don't deny
mistakes on my part. I should have assumed that he'd violate basic
human nature and abruptly turn toward a very large fence...

You violated one of the tenets of the "responsibility code"
you assumed that a snow rider below you could know that you
were there. The downhill snow slider has the right of way
ALL the time. It's up to you to make decisions that cover
all possibilities, including SLOWING WAY DOWN, to a point at
which you could stop if the person BELOW you does something
unexpected. Yeah, I would have yanked your ticket, not his.

The boarder made a sharp back-heel turn to his left,

By your diagram, that puts you right in his blind spot.

And doesn't he have a responsibility to look as he merges onto a trail?
He merged without looking forced several people to shift left. This
made the situation tight and reduced my options. In these situations, I
generally get as far away as possible but terrain got tight in a hurry
when he pushed everyone left. I could have slid to a stop but I'm
certain that I would have caused someone to crash into me. In that
scenario, I wouldn't have been responsible as I would have been struck
from behind, but I would have *felt* responsible as I would have slid
knowing there were people tightening up around me.

By your earlier description, that did not contribute to your accident.
Changing your story?
