Awful for the kid, awful for the driver. I hate groomers on the slope - we've had a couple broken down (burst hydraulic hoses) and ribbon-fenced, but that fencing wouldn't stop anyone form running into the machine if they lost control. At least they're orange, not wood-colored; wood-colored seems to attract crashes. Hope the kid recovers and goes on to become a dedicated skier, but that's a longshot.
