it's still snowing
day 9 straight; both me and the snow.
Report: Atypical - usually the Sierra get huge dumps separated by spans of sunny days - this is a constant few to 10/12 inches of fresh a day without let up. Weather forecast has it continuing for at least another week. The probe goes a good 5-7 feet before hitting the previous settled hardpack and/or rain-glaze from a couple of weeks ago. Some natural slides nearby, so staying alert even inbounds. Bombs triggered a big one a few days ago - about a two foot crown release, 50m wide, high up on High Yellow - kind of filled in the Yellow bowl area. But generally the slower than typical accumulation seems also more stable than typical (but I'm not counting on it - be careful if you're out there.) The skiing is incredibly good. Probably should have taken the powder skis out today but started with the big old GS boards and stuck with them. Took a bit more focus to stay centered in the bottomless untracked but they sure make the cut up slopes easier, arcing right through skier made heaps and ruts and wind mounds as if they weren't there. |
