Default Water-skiing

Evening folks,

In amongst Pip telling us about repainting a bike, I mentioned I was
going to Tignes for a bit of summer R&R. I'd intended to do some
glacier skiing, catch some sun, do a little walking, check out the
aquacentre and find somewhere to live next season.

In actual fact, I looked at apartments, got drunk, had a bad hangover,
looked at more apartments, had some more to drink, looked at
apartments, caught some sun, went home.

So, summer much the same as winter I guess.

That said, a good time was had. As was said elsewhere, general opinon
of the glacier was "It's a bit slushy now - you should've been here for
the powder three weeks ago."

We had nice sunny weather for the weekend and everyone seemed to be
enjoying the cycling, tennis and beach football tournament that was
going on. It rained like clockwork at 6pm every day though. Rumour has
it there was a blizzard a few days after we left.

The wife did some lengths in the new pool. Her opinion - very swish.
She especially liked the hairdryers.

TC's still churning out free shots, and the Lavachet regulars were all
present and correct.

Roll on winter. Summer in London is starting to get me down...

Oh, and they've finally ripped down the old Palafour lift and started
to put up the new one which looked like a 6 man detachable (don't quote
me though - they've still got to hang the wires and actually put the
chairs on...!) - the entrance to it is slightly to the left of the old
one so that it sits forward of the Maison de Tignes rather than to the
side of it, if that makes sense to anyone. Should've taken
pictures...sorry...

Also, end of last season they were testing swipe passes like I've
experienced in ParadiSki and Verbier before, so hopefully they'll bring
that in next season too. Now, if only they could get Bollin/Fresse to
stop seizing up....

The STGM sent a letter last month to Carte Tignes holders.

The new Palafour lift will be a 6 man detachable.

The hands free pass should start in the autumn.

Oh, so *that's* what it said - it got pinned to my kitchen notice board
with the thought "Hmmm.. must sit down and translate that when I'm
feeling strong.."

I really must try harder...

Oh, I never got that. Then again, my Tignes card is actually an old
(5-digit) 'Carte Fidelité' from before they started the 'new' system,
so I guess I'm just not in their mailing list database.

About bloody time!

Mine is 12 years old (according to the letter), also 5-digit.

Maybe you haven't used it recently, or not used the website to order a
pass.

I'm not really bothered about hands free passes.

I mostly go there in the autumn so the only lift that they check is the
funicular. I have to get out my coaches' pass there anyway so it isn't a
big deal to have to show the lift pass as well.

This is true. Last time we went (Dec 2005) they still gave us the
discount but said that next time we should pre-order through the web
page.

Strange chaps, women. Odd priorities.

No wonder they looked so miserable all last season....

Just stumbled across your blog for the first time Pete. Excellent stuff
- Super U story a classic. Reminds me of the time I wanted change for
the car-wash, but didn't know how to ask for change for the car-wash,
so asked for a coin for the trolley, whereupon the helpful young French
lady gave me a plastic token. I must write to the Mayor and demand that
all Super U employees learn English.

As someone about to be duped into buying an apartment up in Tignes it
really stuck a chord. Not that it'll stop me doing it, and I dare say
some gallic consternation will come my way over a pastis when I explain
it *is* just for winter. How could I ever give up my idyllic, grey
corner of London? Now, where's that guide to crash courses in
French....

Matt
