Compassion is absolutely worthless by itself. Doing something about it is what counts. I'd rather have a million people who could actually stand on their own feet than a million people who desperately need compassion. Some people say "Where's my check?" and some people say "I need a job." If compassion means an increasing number of people dependent on welfare, then compassion is actually destructive. Yes, we need to take care of people who for one reason or another can't take care of themselves, but goddammit do we have to create MORE of them? Sorry.. just wanted to see that part again. Excellent post all around. -klaus |

writes And make sure you get the pronunciation right: Pasty rhymes with nasty. Pastie rhymes with hasty. Thank you for that. I would have surely gotten it wrong. Though in some English verse somewhere I did hear of a hasty pasty. That's a hasty pudding. Pasties are easy: for each one get half a pound of chuck or skirt cut in pieces, a pound of thinly sliced potatoes, a quarter of a pound of finely cut onions and a quarter of a pound of shredded swedes or turnips. And some salt pepper and herbs. Make a pound of shortcrust pastry with half butter and half lard, roll it out into a circle, then arrange the food on half of it, leaving an inch or so clear at the edge. First line it with swede, then put a layer of potato slices, then the onions, then the meat mixed with the seasonings, then a last thin layer of potato. If you're being fancy you can wall off a bit at one end and fill it with jam to give a two-course meal. Then fold the pastry over and crimp it round the curved edge. Bake in a moderate oven until its all cooked. It should be a full meal for a manual labourer, and when you throw it down the mineshaft to him (wrapped in a cloth) shouldn't break. -- Sue ];( "The instigator of the latest devastating attack on the USA allegedly lives in "Heaven". There are times I wish I watched the news so I could actually hear what was said instead of relying on The Press to provide truncated quotes. OTOH, then I'd have to hear way too much crap... That wouldn't help, since TV shows select 20 sec clips to their own nefarious ends. That's why the 5+ minutes of Bush-9/11 vide is so telling. Hwever: No matter what your source, a conscientious citizen will make sure to see/hear about any event from partisans of all possible sides, then make up his own mind. The media has deteriorated (actually I don't believe it was ever elevated) to where each source just presents it's own spin, even to the point of selecting slanted 20 sec clips reinforcing their own often bizarre take. Unless a person can assure me he reads/watches the left sources as much/as often as the right sources I don't believe he's a good citizen, nor does he have a clue. The main problem is we don't actually have an active left in this country. We have a middle and a right and an ultra right. That's why we look so strange to the rest of the civilized world. One only has to read world wide newspapers to ascertain this fact. BTW, it's allot easier to keep up with the world now that so many international sources are on the net. In my school days I had to go every week to the reading library and scan the papers - you should have seen me trying to read Le Monde; it was a struggle, but I figured it was important to read at least one source not in English. |

Saying that Charlton Heston and the NRA held their annual meeting deliberately in whatever place just had a headlining gun tragedy when the meeting had been scheduled months in advance of whatever is a bold-faced lie. Bev, ABC planned "The Invasion" for well over a year now and they postponed it and advertisements for it because it had some big references to a hurricane in it. The city in question did have a terrible gun tragedy and instead of showing sympathy, like many organizations and people do in such circumstances, Heston and the NRA came anyway. I'm sorry but I don't recall Moore saying that the NRA purposely rescheduled their meeting to go to this place. They did deliberately come even when asked not to come by the mayor. That is deliberately showing up. That's two parts. Understanding and repair. I don't care if he understands as long as he fixes. He was miffed that Eisenhowere refused to follow tradition by meeting him in the White House for tea (Ike wanted to be President upon entering the White House for the first time), but yes, Truman hopped on the train and went home. |

The whole problem there is that you ar only punishing the kids, which really have it hard enough as it is. If you're unlucky enough to end up, say..., 6th, you're screwed. Meanwhile it's basehits for the parents. Tough, tough problem. -klaus |
