Default Peter Northug - Tour de ski - Toblach

Hi,

I have the feeling that Peter had poorly performing skis that day.

Man, he couldn't draft on Mario (Ok, drafting behind a V2 skier isn't
a *real* gain in no-wind conditions). Then, caught by the chasing
group, looks like he had the same difficulties to draft.
Did he comment on that ? I can't read Norvegian.

He had been lucky that he got an almost open door for the srpint.
What others were thinking about ? When you've got the best finisher in
the group, you don't open the door for him.

In the classical sprint, Dario Cologna skied on the tail of Northug's
left ski right before the last uphill and threw him off balance, his ski
going up and off to the left. Watching the previous few strides before
that, it looked like Cologna either was trying to ski run up on his
left ski or being careless. In any case, if there was any chance for
Northug, and the Russians looked strong, it ended there.

Petter never said anything (is he growing up/getting more mature?) about
the issues, but the Norwegian coaching staff said afterwards that Petter
had significantly worse skis than his competitors for two races, with
this one being the most decisive.

OTOH, I believe he still wouldn't have won all over: Even if he started
alongside Dario on the last day, his shape at that point wasn't good
enough to keep up on the final hill.

He had been lucky that he got an almost open door for the srpint.

That is Petter being Petter: If you study all the intermediate and final
sprints in all the races, you'll notice that he is _extremely_ good at
moving up through a packed field in easy terrain: He "just" increases
his speed by 20-40% or so and shoots through openings other skiers never
recognize as such.

I've only rarely had the chance/need to do this -- years ago -- but
it's amazing how much space there is when you're going a fair bit
faster than others. I can't quite say how it works but it seems to.
Like, it's not so tough getting thru a block of 4 skiers -- 2x2 going
up a hill -- if you're flying much faster. It doesn't even have to
impede them.

Maybe a ski race is, in effect, a bit more like a speed skate event
than a bike race -- if you can avoid the skis and poles, which somehow
seems fairly easy to do. Skaters can get really close. Actually, track
bike racers get twice as close together as roadies, it seems. Altho
trackies and skaters get really close *at the same speed*. Speed
difference seems KEY to finding space when skiing. ...In a flash
you're thru 'em and gone...
