How's the summer going? Man, I haven't posted on the nordic skiing
newsgroup in a looooong time... I'm knocking on 2,000 bike miles for
the year so far. The plan is to get in over 4,000 like the last few
years. I raced a bunch of crits and time trials in April and May. Got
2nd at the first Minnesota State Championship Series Mountain Bike
Race of the year. That was 2nd in the Sport Category 50+. Yeah, I'm 49
now but with my December birthday, I get to ride the whole year as a
50 year old... The guy who got first, Jack Baker, is a skier and 49
also. We had decent skiing in March this year in Minnesota. In fact,
it was the best month of the season. Winters arrive later now but tend
to hang on into March and early April like in the old days. I haven't
been doing any ski specific training like hill bounding, pole hiking
or rollerskiing. I did kayak once and had a blast on the scenic Saint
Croix River dividing Minnesota and Wisconsin. Otherwise, it's been
lots of bike riding with a few rounds of golf thrown in (16 handicap).
If we get snow in November or early December and I make an effort to
get my weight down to around 160-163, I should be able to ski faster
than the last three years.

I've been spending the summer (well, weekends anyway) reclaiming trails
in the local park I live next to. They were set up (mostly) as XC trails
20 or 30 years ago, and maintained by a hiking group until about 10
years ago. Many windstorms later lots of the trails were almost gone, so
I get some exercise and feel like I am doing something useful (raised
Lutheran, can't shake the gotta be useful part of me!). Got most of them
back, so now am looking at fixing them better (roots, stray saplings,
better connecting trails, etc).

Thanks for the post Jay.

Believe it or not, yesterday I went to your old ski page and then to your
recent cycling page. What a coincidence- I was wondering what you were up
to.

I have nothing exciting to report in so far as skiing or training. Dealing
with a litany of injuries. Tomorrow I get a big needle and dye into the hip
in an effort to find out if there is a problem in there. Keeps me from
training. Sitting makes it worse. I think it is my lower back, but as I was
referred to a hip specialist that's going to be ruled out first.

Working too much too. I did get a night commute in the bike in today. Hey if
Floyd can deal with it so can I. (Ooops- not a troll.)

Looking to buy an ocean going row boat with a sliding seat for full body
work outs that are easier on me than roller skiing. But first, I gotta be
able to sit.

Roller skiing maybe 20 km a week, and I am in relatively miserable shape.A
few nights ago I saw the guys out on a 200 mile road romp, and realized that
once again I missed it due to an injury. My first 25 years of skiing were
injury free but then it all caught up to me I guess.

Be well.

Very good!

As you know I'm the same age as you (racing in H50 this year, but my
birthday is still coming up).

I've started in about 6 regular (orienteering) races in the H50 class,
with 3 wins so far.

Last weekend was O-Festivalen, the largest race of the season, with
absolutely everyone present, which resulted in two 5th place finishes
(out of about 90-100 in my class), but quite close to the winning time,
particularly on the longer race on Saturday (70 seconds behind). In the
final relay on Sunday, my team got 2nd, beaten by 12 seconds after a
total race time of about 100 minutes.

Next week (actually starting tomorrow, Saturday) will be a tough one:

6 orienteering races in 5 days, in Sørlandsgaloppen, and one of the
other guys is my colleague Arve Glittum (51). I've been beating him
regularly for the last 4-5 years, but last weekend he came in in front
of me on both days. It will be very tough to beat him on the 6-race
event, particularly since it is taking part on his home turf/terrain. :-(

Very true words! ;-)
