Default Whiteface mountain parkway rollerski

I remember a discussion about it here years ago. I've never driven or skied on it, although I've been meaning to forever. I may be going upstate this summer and thought it would be neat to finally try it out. Has anyone rollerskied on the parkway recently? I heard about repairs on it a couple of years ago - what's the pavement like? I know the Climb to the Castle race starts at the toll gate, but if I want my folks to have the car to pick me up at the top, I would have to ski off from one of the motels down in Wilmington. Is it even possible? Can I ski through/around the toll gate? Is the idea still to do this at the crack of dawn so I'm done before the road opens for traffic?

Thanks!
