Of course. If MH becomes inoperative the GOOD places will be doubly
crowded with rude incompetents.

MH has had the advantage of being the easiest to get to in So Cal - less than 20 miles off 15, on roads rarely closed for snow. I'm thinking that a lot of its customers are not likely to be willing to "enjoy" an hour with chains on to get to Big Bear.

The TV coverage yesterday showed aerial shots of fire front burning into the piney woods just off the Wrightwood populated streets. I haven't found any map yet that shows it that close - maybe they will release one today.

I'm trying to remember how much time (rather than distance, which is 13
miles) I used chains -- from Snow Valley up to Snow Summit, one way;
not required coming down. 25mph supposedly, so I guess half an hour
plus 10 minutes at each end for installation/removal. If chains are
required I really don't want to go anyway -- the nasty wet snow is
unpleasant. In the choice between MH or Snow Valley and not going, I
choose not going.

Are you going this year? Assuming snow, of course.

There's a map, but unless you know what you're looking at you don't know
what you're looking at.

In theory there is no difference between theory and practice,
but in practice there is.

Just by curious coincidence, the current google maps aerial photo of the 138/2 intersection was taken on a day when there was a dusting of snow on the ground, and traffic backed up from Wrightwood down the hill to about a half mile below the intersection.

Did you ever go to what used to be called Ski Sunrise and is now
Mountain High North? I went once. I read s story about a woman who
skied down to the bottom (the lift is at the top, in the parking lot),
got lost, and sent her 7-year-old daughter for help.

Today's map looks like they stopped the fire front right at the edge of the inhabited area of Wrightwood. That should be the end of the threat there, wind permitting.

Says a pathetic old skank who skis on Goodwill gear, only on the groomers, and is a rude, disgusting, psychopathic freak. Sorta like rsa used to be doubly crowded with rude, incompetent assholes. Sure ain't crowded anymore, but some of the assholes still post.

Irony abounds.

Today Cal Fire reports 100% contained. The furthest west the fire got was just at the edge of the inhabited area of Wrightwood along SR2. Many homes and small ranches along SR138 between I15 and the intersection of SR2 were burned, and that stretch of road is still closed while utility crews replace damaged poles. On the eastern edge, the fire just made it to the top of Cajon Pass, taking out the Summit Inn, a restaurant and motel that was built back in the late 50s when Route 66 was the main road through the area.

The fire's point of origin was where the bottom of a steep-walled canyon was widened years ago to let the 66 highway and multiple railway lines pass through (Blue Cut). The official word is that the cause is still under investigation, but many of these fires the cause is obvious to the investigators bu they sit on an official announcement until it can be properly documented, or because they are laying a trap for the arsonist. For example, a person was just arrested here in San Diego County last week for starting a series of fires on his way home from losing nights at the local Indian casinos.. His habit was so firm that fire investigators just put up cameras on the roads out of the casinos and recorded him doing it, but in the interim they didn't let on that they suspected him.

I went up there once in the summer time when I was just touristing around in the mountains. Looked pretty bleak without any snow, which I guess most ski areas do.

I found that Cal Tech/JPL has an observatory right next door, and the other end of that day in the mountains was at the Mt Wilson observatory.
