Any info on Les Menuires would be appreciated. We are planning a trip
in late January, will be staying at Hotel L' Ours Blanc. What is the
town like, bars, restaurants, etc How easy is it to get around as
village is quite dispersed.

First I have to say, that in my opinion Les Menuires is one of the most
awful towns in the alps. In germany we call the style, the houses in Les
Menuires are built "beton-bunker".

The village is not as dispersed as it looks like. If you stay at Hotel
L'Ours Blanc you can reach all the bars and restaurants within 15 min by
walking. And you have an easy access to the lifts and slopes.

The bars are ok. Some are overcrowded by drunken british and dutch people.

Have spent 7 skiing weeks in Les Menuires all in all. It provides good
access to the 3V, but isn't the prettiest of alpine towns. On the upside
though, it's relatively cheap compared to Val T, Meribel, Courcheval etc, so
perhaps a better option than those for a keen skier on a budget, or for
those with more sense than money

Bars - actually, I found it fairly quiet in January, except when I went as
part of a big corporate event, when we "drunken British" did tend to
monopolize a couple of the bars in the quarter we were staying in by virtue
of our large numbers. However, even in February half term, the bars were
virtually empty. Restaurants - on the whole, ok to average, but there was
one particular restaurant called the Marmite De Geant, which was excellent,
and well worth making yourself a booking there (you will need to book a
couple of days in advance). Getting around isn't a problem - there is a
regular Navette (free) from one half to the other, or alternatively it's an
easy ski from one centre to the other.

If skiing is what is important to you, then I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

I can second that. The main attraction of Les Menuires is the skiing. It
has some of the best in the 3 valleys. La Masse never seems crowded, has
good runs and good snow. Getting to Meribel and Motterat is also very
easy, but I find the piste map of the Mont de la Chambre area a little
confusing. IIRC the bars and night life are on the quiet side.

It's a soulless pile of concrete that I wouldn't recommend to anyone. It
needs to be knocked down and rebuilt. The only good thing about it are the
lifts to Meribel and beyond. It's the only place I've skied that I will
definitely not go back to, ever.

You have picked a nice hotel. Several years we have skiied all the way from
Courchevel 1650 to have lunch there. It's definitely ski -in/ski out (20m
anyway), and the lunches on the sun terrace are a good memory. Nice staff
too, and the hotel looks good. It's slightly above the main village and
away from the concrete jungle.

Les Menuires is a good centre for the skiing - as other posters say, its
also the ugliest, but it's very practical I guess. La Masse is a lovely
area, and you are well placed to pop over the ridge into the Meribel
valley.

Am I alone in thinking that it's the people you go with that makes a
holiday? Les menuires is not the best place to look at - I have to
agree. It is however, perfectly functional. The restaurants are good
enough, the bars were buzzing when I was there (Californication and So
Lonely will never sound the same again) but the skiing and company made
it a brilliant experience. IMNSHO you can ram all the aesthetically
pleasing nonsense for a good bit of ski in/ ski out, stagger in/ stagger
out practicality. IF there was no snow and IF I had chosen to go with a
real bunch of losers then I suppose a pretty resort might make up for it
some how or another. But probably not.

Why settle for good company and good snow when you could have good company,
good snow and a decent resort?

Erm, because you can have as good a holiday at half the price? Let's not
go down the road of saying that Les Menuires is not a decent resort. I
have stayed in all the 3Vs and it is as good as any of them. What you
lose in some areas you gain in others. If you want picture postcard
village ski resorts, may I suggest you look somewhere other than France.
