Default Bindings and boots

I have been out of X-CountrySkiing for awhile and I'm getting back into
backcountry
and off track touring/camping. My old boots are 75mm nn. I'm going to be
modernizing my gear.
Are the new style bar nnn's better or not. I find the old 75mm bindings and
boots are rare.

Thanks Bob

_ It depends on exactly what you want to do. If it's most touring
and poking around in the woods, I think either NNN/BC or the
Salomn BC version will work well for you. IMHO, much better
than standard 3 pin. There are a lot of 75mm NN boots around,
but they are all heavy plastic boots normally called "Telemark"
boots.

_ What you really need to start with is boots. Pick the boots
you think will provide the right balance of support and lightness
and that fit you very well. Then use the bindings that work
with that boot. The big problem with NNN/BC is not the binding,
but the lack of really beefy boots. You can get a fine setup
for general touring, but if you're interested in learning to
telemark or skiing steeper things, it's very difficult to
find NNN/BC boots that will provide enough support.

_ As far as skis go, I highly recommend any of the Fischer
S-bounds series skis. If you want to stick with 3pin, then
there are some very light touring appropriate boots now
being made. Scarpa's T4 and Garmont's excursions are good
examples. If you're going to be doing overnight winter
stuff there's a lot of advantages to getting a plastic
boot with a liner, particularly in really cold weather.
Karhu still makes a combo leather/plastic 75mm NN touring
style boot.
