Default Heavenly Trip Report

Web site is here with pictures.
http://www.nogodforme.com/Reno2010.htm

One day of rain and snow, the next was sunny, which is in the web
page.

Slopes were packed. It was 16" of snow the previous day. Trails
were groomed to start, turned to crud later in the afternoon. Some
trails were not groomed which was more of a challenge. Wiping out in
them meant walking down the hill to a flat spot.

This time of the year can be summed up as 2 days of snow (bad
conditions), 2 days of sun (go go go).

Gambling sucked, slots and VP machines were tight. I have another
web page which talks about that.
http://www.tribalwar.com/forums/show...624243&page=11

Mexican food at Lakeside Inn (Latin Soul) was the best.

Great trip. Heavenly is a great mountain. Start out with the
gondola, ride the California trail, stay on the California side to
start, explore, then take the sky express to the Nevada side and eat
lunch at East Peak lodge. Ride the Orian trail thinking of Sonny, do
Comet, and everything on the Nevada side, then head back to the
gondola. There's a grocery store next to the village with a great
pizza place next door, which has garlic crust pizza, yum. In the
morning the grocery store has bakery treats to pick from. Grab a
milk and you're all set. Buy your lift tickets 7 days in advance to
get a discount. Rent equipment from the powderhouse here.

Irony meter ascends into Heavenly. A guy who calls himself nogodforme
skis Heavenly.
Oh, well. He's posting to rsa. Obviously, no ethics or taste or
integrity for him, either.

That will do it.

Wasn't "packed" on the north lake - hardly anybody around but locals, no
lines, nothing. But the freshies were cold fluff, and deep, and still
tracked out in an hour, including the hike-to. Nature of the game.

Spent time early in the week plowing the driveway, the bro-in-law's
driveway, and the dam road since the city plow was delayed to
essentially non-existent for 24. However, once they got rolling the city
has been by regularly, and the guy has avoided building a berm in my
driveway, so kudos, and all is forgiven.

I just got done shoveling the driveway again. I been shoveling every
day for a week. Who would have thought Detroit would get so much
snow?

Next year I'm spending the winter in Florida.

Vote for Palin-Brown in 2012. Repeal the nightmares.

Merry Christmas everyone. God bless us all.

The clock tower is the Heavenly village. Yes, it can be a meeting
place. Directly under the clock is the ticket center and the
gondola.

On the north side is the Marriott, that's where I stayed.

On the south side is the Powder House ski rental shop, a breakfast
place, and a few other shops. Around the corner is an ice skating
rink, more coffee shops, a movie theater, and the Marriott vacation
resort. Across the street from that is a grocery store, pizza
joint, and more strip mall shops.

So basically, everything is in the village area, just depends on how
far you want to walk. Yes, you can tell people to meet you at the
gondola clock and they'll know where to go.

Cold snap in Florida, yes. Low temps are in the 50s, highs go back
into the 70s. We still walk around in shorts.

I would never live in a place that had snow, unless I could ski.
Move to Denver, Salt Lake City, or Reno.

How's it looking out there snow wise. I moved to PC from NShore just
before the base area was taken out at Alpine, end of '80. When did
happen? 82? 83?

The news is sounding like some serious snow has fallen and is on the
way. But you know how the news is! Catch me up!

March 31,1982 -
see:
http://www.avalanche.org/moonstone/TAR/avi%20review%20articles/Alpine%20Meadows%20-%20The%20Story.htm
I tried to drive over to Alpine that morning but could not get up the
approach road so was neither a victim nor a rescuer, but just very
lucky. FWIW, Alpine Meadows has such loyal staff and slow turnover that
some of the people involved still work the mountain almost 30 years
later - you can ask them about their experiences.

There's a very good book for those with additional interest: _A WALL OF
WHITE_ by Jennifer Woodlief
Quote from Amazon site
http://www.amazon.com/Wall-White-Heroism-Survival-Avalanche/dp/1416546928/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1292863474&sr=1-1:

"Fiercely compelling and at times heartbreaking, Jennifer Woodlief's A
Wall of White builds with the power of an oncoming avalanche until the
last, and final, redeeming moment. A powerhouse inside-look at mountain
rescuers' lives, A Wall of White deserves to fit on bookshelves
alongside Jon Krakauer's Into Thin Air and Sebastian Junger's A Perfect
Storm. Required reading for adventure fans."-- Wayne Johnson, author of
White Heat: The Extreme Skiing Life

A good review at
http://www.powdermag.com/features/news/book-review-a-wall-of-white/

Highly recommended read if you have any interest in the history of skiing.

The news is sounding like some serious snow has fallen and is on the
way. But you know how the news is! Catch me up!

Yeah - it keeps coming. 67 inches this storm so far. It's however,
pretty warm so the snow's very heavy, and has accompanying high winds so
the upper slopes are closed, which is fortunate since there's lots of
wind loading. Avalanche danger is hard to predict, even inbounds, see above.

When we get a cold storm it should be epic, if it doesn't all slide off
and fill the bowl bottoms.
