LAX to Mammoth as low as $132 round trip this year if you fly
midweek. That is competitive with gasoline costs. The big problem
with that for me is getting to and parking at LAX.

Go up to the valley and take a flyaway bus? It seems like there'd be
another cheap off site area to the south as well.

Are you serious? Who would fly to Mammoth from LA? It's not that
long a drive. Go through security, get a pat down, have all your
stuff x-rayed, and pay a fine for your ski bags? You can't be
serious. It's probably a four hour flight each way, counting parking,
going through security, and delays. And you can't take a water bottle
so you have to pay for water on the flight. I'll stop here.

Vote for Palin-Brown in 2012. Repeal the nightmares.

Merry Christmas everyone. God bless us all.

I wonder what sort of security they have at the little bitty Mammoth
airport?

You're still talking about flying there from LAX and I suspect they might
still have some degree of security there...

Having said that, when I take a 50 minute domestic flight to Vancouver out
of my home town on a 30 passenger Dash 8 Turboprop I still get the full
security treatment. Its just like bars asking 50 year old people for ID, You
just do it everywhere and it becomes part of the routine. Lately the public
is showing a little resistance to being felt up, but I think most other
security is staying.

Not gas competitive if you go more than one to a car.
Make it 4 friendly people, check into the Motel 6 (dam shame Kitzbuhel
bunkhouse closed - and what was the name of the second bunkhouse, also
closed?) and travel/lodging costs can be minimized. It's still the out
of control ticket prices that kill you.

When Dave was in his heyday Mammoth, both town and ski operation, was a
real treasure - now it's just another chain store. But they can't wreck
the mountain. It's a dam fine mountain.

I stayed at Motel 6 in Mammoth back when you had to pay extra for a
key to the TV. I stayed at one of the dorm houses in my cheapo Navy
days. I recall it was $6 a night, $7 on weekends, for bunk and
towel. I had a great time with the guys I met there - they took me on
my first trip to Hot Creek, and helped me get my VW Bug unstuck. I
eventually graduated to motels and condos, especially when staying
with the kids.

If you still want more of the old mom'n'pop feel, stay in June Lake.

I remember flying from Fort Sill, at the Lawton airport there was only
one gate. And security was a joke. The guy ahead of me had a huge
boom box on his shoulder and never set off the metal detector. We
flew to Chicago and never had to pass security again. I'm sure it's
different today.

I flew in and out of Barcelona in 02. Nuthin'. Even at that time it
was a little disconcerting. But there is a limited amount of money and
resources that we can throw at these things so a little profiling and
common sense is required. I almost wish that they'd go ahead and make
their big hit. Enough that we'd go into the "all out war" mode and get
it over with.
