Hehe. That's the huffing and puffington post. That means that the
picture is most likely doctored to fit a storyline.

As best I can tell from this aerial view

http://abclocal.go.com/kabc/story?se...fic&id=7868481

this is where the washout happened:

Looking in google earth gives a better idea of the terrain, but it looks
kind of smooth there -- where would the water have come from? It would
be nice if they gave coordinates...

The google camera must have been traveling early morning. I have seen
that sun angle early mornings going into Big Bear

There's one really bad spot where you're aimed directly into the rising
sun -- you get it straight on as well as reflected off your hood.
Fortunately there's a passing lane there because you can't see the road
at all. I try to follow another car into that turn, it's easier to see
a car than the barrier.

How's flooding down south?

GE says that spot is ~9.5 miles south of Running Springs.

Have you ever used 18 through Arrowhead to get there? Shorter than 38...

I came back that way one day after chairhiking at Snow summit - ride
up, hike down. We visited a fire watch tower just Rim of the World
Drive, right below which was an impressively large concrete building
that used to house AT&T microwave relay equipment, but which is mostly
empty now since the bulk of the long signals go by satellite or
optical fiber. It's much longer around than 330, and I have no
experience with it in the winter. Perhaps I'll leave a little early
and give it a try next week.
