Holiday report - St Gervais/Megeve/Combloux
We spent Xmas and New Year in St Gervais and used the "Evasion" ski-pass
throughout. Xmas week was great, relatively few people and a couple of sunny days with new snow. The snow started to get really grotty towards the end of the week but then we got a fresh fall just after Xmas - New Year week was chock-a-block around St Gervais and Megeve and the new snow soon got trampled to death. A Snowcoach ski guide we met in a restaurant recommended we try Combloux so we drove over (about 30 mins including putting snow-chains on) and were amazed at the place - lovely tree-lined runs, plenty of groomed snow, and virtually empty! It is very much a beginner / low-intermediate resort, it was ideal for our mixed ability group and I'd seriously recommend the place..... even though I skied the arse off it in a couple of days it was delightful to get away from the bedlam of the busier areas, and it is so pretty there......It certainly gave us a fantastic last 3 days of the holiday. St Nicholas was OK - quiet, but very limited skiing - enough for a foray but not for a re-visit. Top tip for lift-pass photos - don't bother!! We had got pics for half of the group before we arrived in St Gervais and expected to have to use a photo booth for the rest. The lady in the lift-pass office at the telecabin simply zapped us with a web-cam and issued us with "smart-card" passes (that do not carry a photo) - I assume they take your pic in case you lose your pass. Last year they printed the photo on the Pass, But I think the image can be displayed on a screen at the lift as you go through the turnstile. -- Chris *:-) Downhill Good, Uphill BAD! www.suffolkvikings.org.uk |
