We are just NW of London on Herts/Bucks border

Many thanks in advance

There is a place just off the M25 junction on the way to Dover.

I went in last year and ended up just buying them for £100.

What size do you need......

I bought mine from Halfords for £54. I saw them all over France for 90+
Euros!!! To be honest, you'd be better buying them. You've got them, then.

Try looking on eBay. I did see a few pairs on there relatively cheap.

Beware cheap snow chains if you are driving more than 100 metres at 10mph.
If they come off unexpectedly the whell arch damage etc. can be severe.

Oh aye, plus they'll often be a bugger to fit. In Andorra over
xmyth/newyear there were hundreds of unprepared French and Spanish
drivers buying new, cheap chains when they got caught out by
conditions, often walking miles back to their stranded cars, then
taking an age to get them put on, as a howling gale with horizontal
snow is not ideal for a first-time experience :-}

I hired a roof box from Carbox in Windsor, they hire/sell chains too.
Excellent service, highly recommended. See www.carbox.co.uk.

If you think you might need the chains again I'd buy them though, they
are pretty expensive to hire.

Personally, I'd buy them in France at a hypermarche on the way down,
I've done that a couple of time now and they've been cheaper than in the
UK. Either that or look on eBay!

You do, of course, have a very good point. The ones I saw, however, were
either on sale at places like Halfords or available from specialist places
like that snowchain place that's always advertised in the magazines. Not
that I'll know if any of them are any good, but I thought that if shops like
these are selling them, they must be OK to a point.

As it is, I didn't need mine despite a massive dump the night before I got
to Val Cenis and the two nights before I left. The car didn't get moved in
between, and they kept the roads very clear... although, I did have to dig
my car out as a snowplough created a big mound all down the road blocking
the car in!!! Kindly local lent me a shovel... merci, mon ami!! LOL

I had that in La Tania last Feb. It turned to ice and we had to dynamite the
car out again (nearly).

BT, DT, GTTS. Luckily the (avalanche) snow shovel I carry is a metal
one, so I've always been able to dig through it. Plastic-bladed ones
would have really struggled.

I saw some a few weeks ago in Migros (Swiss supermarket) for 20-odd pounds,
looked better than my set of Halfords bought ones. And I guess the swiss
ought to know about snow chains.
