Backcountry Suggestions Near Steamboat Springs?
Will be visiting Colorado after Xmas and may have an opportunity to do some
light bc touring within, say, a 50 mile radius of Steamboat Springs. Could anybody recommend some general areas--not looking for extreme stuff or your secret place, just some pointers so I can start studying the topos and go out for a day or so. Not looking for an avalanche study either. Thanks. TFJ |

Rabbit Ears Pass area - for general touring or a round trip to Rabbit Ears
Peak. Be prepared to share the area with snowmobilers. Other suggestions: the Hahns Peak area (north of Steamboat) and Dunckley Pass area (south) A bit farther than 50 miles but still worth the trip would be the Cameron Pass area along state highway 14 near Walden. A few suggestions the Zimmerman lake and Lake Agnes Montgomery Pass I found some trail lists on Wildernet at URL: http://areas.wildernet.com/pages/are...st&CU_ID= 127 Select "Cross-country Skiing" on the first drop down menu for a list of other areas within 50 miles of Steamboat. There is also an excellent guide (unfortunately out of print but still obtainable through Amazon) that describes many tours in the Rabbit Ears Pass and Cameron Pass areas - Skiing Colorado's Backcountry - Northern Mountains, Trails and Tours, by Brian Litz & Kurt Lankford (1989). wrote in message news:Z%bAb.441403$Fm2.439271@attbi_s04...
