Well take a look he http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1179...googlenews_wsj From TFA: "Texans made up 6.5% of all visits to Rocky Mountain area ski resorts last year, second only to Coloradans, according to a survey by the National Ski Areas Association, a trade group in Lakewood, Colo." If this helps keep 'em down where they belong, good on Bearfire. "The technology that makes it possible, which is known as Snowflex, uses water-misting systems to create a nonrefrigerated surface -- think of wet, white Astroturf with bristles -- that is slippery enough for skiing but with enough grip for turning. A few Snowflex slopes are operating in Europe, including one that is open year-round in Noeux-les-Mines, France. It is built on old coal-mining slag heaps in an area near Lille that isn't naturally conducive to skiing. But this is Texas, so it must be bigger. With 650,000 square feet of skiable surface, the Bearfire slopes promise to be six times the size of the artificial slope in France. The mountain's superstructure is supposed to rise about 240 feet and require 7,000 tons of steel." 240 feet of vert? Man, that's almost as big as Mt Trashmore. //Walt |

Sam Seiber writes: Sam "A-Basin is too hot above 65 degrees" Seiber Yesterday was about perfect. The breeze kept everything cool. The skiing was kind of boring. I'm not going back up until they put the bumps back on Ramrod. The levelled everything to let some people in tight suits run a race course. That avalanche last year really spooked them. There is a bunch of terrain that was closed with a lot more snow than what I remember skiing in previous years. Bruno. |

Personally, I was hoping they'd convert the old Astrodome in Houston to an indoor "snow" resort. It'll be interesting to see if these guys can come up with the money. |

My query is how long is this slope going to be? IMHO snoflex heats up skis even quicker than dendex, and on a hot day I start overheating the bases of my skis (sometimes too hot to touch) on one run of our 130m slope with the sprinklers on but no wax on my skis. now for a Brit I am on the large side 6'1" and 17st but I also suspect Texas may be a just a tad warmer than suffolk -- Chris *:-) Downhill Good, Uphill BAD! www.suffolkvikings.org.uk |

That's 245 meters for people who don't use archaic measuring systems. Alternatively, you should be able to calculate the run length by crunching 240' and whatever percent slope you think they might build. Since this is Texas, I'd bet on a 65,000' x 10'foot area with a nearly flat pitch. //Walt |
