Default When does skiing tend to start in germany / austria?

Hi,

When does skiing tend to start at the german and austrian end of the
alps? I have some work to do in Munich, and I may be able to delay
them a few weeks, possibly until november but probably not until
december. Is there any chance I will be able to get some sliding in?

Thanks.

I did think about metioning skiing worth doing. I have never been to
a glacier, but I have images of a few hundred yards of ice and lots of
crowds. What are they like? It it worth a drive to glaciers if it
does not snow?

Thanks for the input,

Hugh

Obergurgl are opening 14th November according to their website. Resorts all have
an official opening date which you can usually find on their website.

It really depends on the weather. If there is no snow resorts still open but
you can not ski. If there is early snow many resorts will open some lifts early
(maybe just on the weekends) for the locals.

I can not comment upon the reliability of early snow in Austria beyond, "Better
than France".

Only got experience of the Tignes glacier in summer, but I was
pleasantly surprised - quite a few KM of piste, big snow-park, crowded
first thing, but gradually eases as people spread out a bit. Snow
quality wasn't great, but it was like it is in April - ice in the
morning, slush towards lunch. I'd do it again, especially as you can
use the lift pass in the afternoon for mountain bikes or hiking.

Cheers

What's worth doing?
First the various Olympic Alpine and Nordic teams practice across the Alps.
2nd most skiers really don't bother to ski in summer.
I've skied the Stubai, but that was a winter trip. I'm not certain of
its current status, but there are others. The USA has Hood.
You aren't going to get powder. Personally, I like powder skiing and I
like really long runs. But summer glaciers are a small mere part of the
skiing experience (worth doing once). Many hike (huff it). Next year
I'm skiing on the Juneau ice fields as part of glaciological research and
resurveying points measured 2 decades prior. But if you need challenge,
chase Olympic skiers.

Stubai, Hintertux and Kitzsteinhorn are all a "couple of hours" from Munich.

Often by mid to late October the glaciers have fully opened - not just the
couple of runs they try to keep going during the summer months. I guess I
would favour Stubai, and would start going once the runs to middle station
are all open. It is nice when the valley run is open though!

I don't really rate the Zugspitze. I always think its rather limiting and
crowded.

Of course, once the snows arrive the Austrian resorts open. They may quote
opening dates in December, but once there is snow they open as much as
possible. Even low areas like Ski Welt (one hour from Munich) is likely to
be partially open by end of November. High resorts like Obertauern often
have massive amounts of early snow.

Glacier skiing already started (hintertuxer gletscher, dachsteiner
gletscher)
Normal skiing starts as from the end of november (last weekend, in
Ischgl, St Anton, Obergurgl, resorts like that)

For your information, French Glaciers were closed several weeks last few
weeks for skiing. Austria had glaciers opened.
I am doing seasonal openings for about 7 years now in Austria and there
was only one snowless opening in all of these years. And even then I
could ski pretty good (Ischgl).
So I don't agree with you that reliabilty of early snow in Austria is
better then in France. It totally depends where you are going.
Today hintertux has 36 km opened with over 1 meter of fresh snow.
Tignes only has 4 or 5 lifts openend with 30 cm of snow.
Les deux Alpes isn't even open!

Les Deux Alpes opens for October half-term for the Mondial du Ski
(www.mondialduski.com) and Mondial du Snowboard
(www.mondialdusnow.com) and then fully at the very end of November.
There is however a very good layer on the glacier already.
