I use to ski every weekend in Sierra Nevada. It's located 30 kms away from
Granada, where there are an international airport, anyway you have Malaga
Airport at 160 kms.
Road to Sierra nevada is good.
There in the resort you can find a lot od acommodation, hotels (some cheap
and normal and some very good and expensive) and apartments, but honestly i
think it's better to go to a hotel. Streets are a mess and a bit dirty, so i
recommend to ask for the lower part of Sierra Nevada, called "Pradollano".
Skiing season normally starts on november 25th (moreless) and use to be
finished on the last day of April.
It has 75 kms. of pistes in four areas: Borreguiles / Laguna / Loma de Dilar
y El Rio with green, blue, red and easy black pistes. Have several pists
recognized by FIS where have been FIS world championships and World Cup.
Rise of 1200 mts. and good conditions of snow
Normally is very crowded on weekends or holidays, but if you go on working
days there is not too much people. The best of the resort is the weather,
most of the days plenty of sun, at least 70 % of the season and apreski, a
lot of bars, pubs, restaurants opened till morning. Worst thing is the wind,
you can find strong winds that usually closes the lifts.
Another important factor to take in mind is due to the highness of the
mountains (Veleta has 3.400 mts.) you can find nice snow till may, even
June, althoug lifts close at final on April, but if you practise nordic
skiing or crosscountry it's important to take in mind. We use to say Sierra
Nevada have the best spring snow in the whole world cause is not as bad as
in other resorts, and is as easily skiable as funny.
Anyway I invite you to come, to see www.sierranevadaski.com or
www.nevasport.com/phorum where we can answer any question if you come
(although phorum is in spanish).
You can find a lot of brittish and scandinavian people who lives in Marbella
and Costa del Sol who usually goes for some sun and skiing to Sierra nevada.
Ahh, i forgot, the beach is 60 kms from the resort and you can see the
Mediterranean sea and even Morocco from the peaks. Some pics:
