What is "pitch"?
What is meant by "pitch"?
I just read that Rumor at Gore is has a pitch of 70. It was steep, but it couldn't have been 70 degrees, but I don't know what else it might refer to. |

The probably meant 70 percent pitch. Percent in pitch means the percent vertically in comparison to the horizontal, so a 100% pitch is a 45 degree slope. -- Alan Baker Vancouver, British Columbia http://gallery.me.com/alangbaker/100008/DSCF0162/web.jpg |

Geez, I was satified with the very first answer; didn't know I would get all the rest. How steep do trails get? |

For sustained distances, about 50 degrees is about the most you're going to find in-bounds. Backcountry steep-mavens are tackling 60 degree plus terrain - more than that and the skis (and snow) won't stick. See http://www.skinet.com/skiing/2001-12/how-steep-steep //Walt |
