First rule for a Colorado snow reporter, "There is no hardpack".
See thru ice=packed powder. Damn, maybe I should apply for the
job. Right on.

Sam you are right on.

In the spring is it slushy powder or wet packed powder?

In SoCal it's all packed powder all the time. Frequently slushy packed
powder in the afternoon, even in winter. Generally solid-ice-corduroy
packed powder first thing in the morning.

Some New England areas are the same.

Of course, I need to wear crampons to cross some of the "packed
powder".

Lets just say, that when hunting deer, its important to go
to the woods where the deer live.

We have lots of deer nearby. The good news is that hunting
season opens early next month.

Mine's EXCELLENT, I thought you
should know. : )

Bastad. I went to Wal-Mart today and nearly was smothered
between two fat chicks in sweats trying to squeeze past me
on both sides in the frozen food aisle.

On the other hand, I had to move back to New York to
make it so.

I understand. I tried to hunt deer in Northern Minnesota
for years and came away frustrated year after year. Moved
down here, and normally our hunt ends before the sun comes
up on opening day. Its not a matter of bagging a deer, its
a matter of which deer to bag. You can afford to be choosy
even, and still have time for beer before brunch.

: ( Don't even ask.

I just finished Bryson's "walk in the woods" and really
can't stop thinking about how great it would be to have a
mountain, 'any' mountain nearby to hike. I must see Mt.
Washington someday soon.

I was unaware that the Appalacian trial ran over and near so
many ski mountains. Does it go right over Killington? That
was in there, but I'm not sure if it was one of his day
hikes on the trail or off.

So it can't be that bad. Plus, New York has chicks.

We have deer.

Yes, the AT goes over quite a few peaks which have ski areas,
including Killington.

To quote: "Killington has granted a perpetual easement to the Green
Mountain Club and the Appalachian Trail Conference to ensure
unobstructed public access to scenic hiking trails."

Fortunately, the seasons are compatible.

Fat chicks need luvin' too....

Try hunting Doublebreasted Bedbounders instead.

I typically subscribe to the theory "If it's brown, it's down", if you
know what I mean....

Indeed. Not to mention the Yankees and the Fingerlakes.

Fat

OK guys - let's stay within shouting distance of the topic - which is
moderate skiing - Wait-that's not right. It's skiing while modervated -
Wait-that's not it either. It's alpine skiing - that's it. So toss in an
occasional reference to the underlying raison d'etre and normalcy shall
prevail, thus sayeth Calvin Coolidge the dedicated outdoorsman and
expert skier.

BTW, Alpine Meadows announced yesterday that they would open Friday.
Naturally the day dawned perfectly clear, after snowing through the
weekend; and the forecast shows nothing for a week. Alpine apparently
killed the golden storm; here's hoping the announcement didn't deter
future storms.

Egads!! Am I on the verge of being blackballed?! (Better than
blueballed I suppose - although that hasn't been an issue lately)
giggle

Seriously though, I thought we were engaging in a rather witty
repartee regarding the relative advantage (singular) of getting laid
versus skiing.

ObSkiing: This moderated group gets about as much traffic as A-Lift on
a weekday. I don't know if that's good or bad....

Maybe the repartee wasn't quite as witty as you thought? =P

Obskiing: visiting friends and relatives in VA and NC, but planning on
going skiing the day after we fly back to CO -- hope it'll be worth the
agony of anticipation!
