back on the snow
Hey all,
I used to post here a lot from around 1995 - 2003, or thereabouts. I've still been snowboarding, but spending much more time in the water, working at my desk etc. Anyone still here from back then? I know a bunch of the names, but I'm at work and can't remember off top of my head. Dave Roberts? Anyway, I'm starting a little side project - my own snowboard company: Rise Snowboards Inc. Vermont, USA 2008 - Prototype 2009 - Production - Take the high road! - I have contacts at Burton going way back, know Hayes Bros. in VT, which also has a press, and this is my brother's company: http://www.selectdesign.com Clients include Burton, Cannondale, Timberland, Ben & Jerry's, Pepsi, US Snowboarding, etc., etc. So as you can see, I have the groundwork in place. I'm still doing my regular freelance work, I'm just getting started on this. Not sure how far it will go, but I'll have t-shirts and stickers this year, and will at least build my prototype: Rise Arise - 162cm, directional, wood core, "step cap", top notch sintered base, wrap around edges, maybe some kevlar or other lightweight materials, titanuim???? More specs available. There will also be the ladies' board: Rise Rose - 144cm, etc. I have logos, etc. Just thought I'd throw this out in case anyone has suggestions, comments etc. I'll probably just give a couple boards to friends, who rip in park and freeride and see where it goes from there. This group has always been great, and I've missed it the last few years. Also, put up a bunch of links on my YouTube page, including Mervin, TB 8 and other snowboard trailers...enjoy! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TNioEUwGvzs http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-C0PCZ99k08 There's no sound on some of them for some reason. Others, including a bunch of surf clips on the site. Anyway, thanks in advance for any advice. I hope you're all getting ready for winter here in the No. Hemisphere. Cheers! -jw -- jsw's new england surf page http://the_urchin.home.comcast.net/index.html surf photos - surf words - surf art - all new england! |

I leave for a while and this place goes to pot!!! ;-) Anyway, would welcome feedback if anyone has it... This place brightens up in the northern winter, but some of us get bored with the weeners turning up and asking question we were bored with in 1995. Dave Roberts is still around, but posts under a different name now. I'll leave it to him to introduce himself. -- Champ |

However, the advent of cheesy web-based forums has for some reason meant a migration of people. For the masses, the ability to pimp up your avatar, include graphical signatures and graphical smileys means much more than the pure speed afforded by usenet and killfiles from suitable clients. Plus, really, where's snowboarding going? The large technological innovations of the 90s are complete, and now stuff's just being refined to eek out that extra 0.001%. The rest is just marketing. With that, there just doesn't seem to be the same breadth of topics to talk about. We haven't even had a wacky concept to deride and laugh at for a while. Come winter, we'll get the "is this board good for me" posts, which can't be answered in the FAQ, and only get a discussion if a couple of the regulars have tried it. Many posts go unanswered, not because we're rude, but because the number of people reading has dropped, and out of those, no-one's ridden the board being queried. For me, I'm set with my gear, and haven't bothered trying a different board for almost 2 seasons now. The last one being a Fish which I borrowed off a mate for an hour. Hardly an exhaustive test though. I know, I want to go to NZ to surf and snowboard one day. You were never mean to me...I was probably mean to a few people once or twice, but didn't really mean it... I know you from when you were briefly on alt.surfing as well (Foon is still there, Dave Blake, T. Keener, Surfer Bob, and a bunch of others. But swort of like here, traffic can go way down, in part due to as you say Web-based forums, which can suck for the reasons you stated, even though content can be really good. It's just hugely inefficient compared with Usenet. (Google aint that grewat either, and I use a newsreader usually, just this when at my desk sometimes). I think those of us who got on here back in the day (me, 1996?) still use the news- readers....no problem if people don't, whatever works for ya. I've been spending WAY more time in the water the last ten years or so than snowboarding, but I still have my ol' trusty Burton A.deck (in great shape considering it's age.) I put probably 50 days on it when I worked at Mount Snow (1995 - 1996). Then loaned it to my brother who used it for a year or two (learned on it). I still also have my 2004 Santa Cruz big mountain board - I think it's called the W164. I'm only 5'9" and about 160lbs, but the board is really maneuverable, and fast as sh*t. Not sure I posted this earlier, but you can see the logos he http://the_urchin.home.comcast.net/photos/logos1.html Me on the old A.deck: http://the_urchin.home.comcast.net/photos/snow.html Not trying to promote any one company or anything, just FYI. Anyway, good to hear from you again, and others. I'll read rest of your reply when I have more time...I'm on deadline for work right now. Saving msgs. I don't get to right away. btw, I hope I can pull this snowboard thing off. Burton is a client of my brother's co., etc. I'm just doing it in my spare time as I also do my regular freelance work to keep food on the table. Talk to you later, -jw -- rise snowboards inc. vermont usa t-shirts and stickers - 2007 prototype - 2008 production - 2009 |

There were quite a few flames... thinking back, they were quite amusing. Yeah, but as you know they can get old, esp. when it's non-stop. I remember alt.skate-board before it went to pot, so to speak...hey, I do that on occasion, too, but can keep my head screwed on straight wehn I do...haha. I know you from when you were briefly on alt.surfing as well (Foon is still there, Dave Blake, T. Keener, Surfer Bob, and a bunch of others. Ha! Now that's a blast from the past. Talk about a volatile group, but it was funny as hell. I've not been there for a very long time. Still surfing though, just not so much. Still very volitile, but way less traffic. Sort of like here, people moved onto SurferMag BB (eh...) and other Web forums. All those animated smilies and crap really bugged me at first and still do a little, but I've become inured. I think we all agree, Web forums are at best, a necessary (?) evil in the digital communication world. I've been spending WAY more time in the water the last ten years or so than snowboarding, but I still have my ol' trusty Burton A.deck (in great shape considering I'm suprised that thing hasn't rusted away. Must be 10 years old by now! Yeah, I take good care of my boards. In between the A.deck and the Santa Cruz, I was on an Burton SuperModel 162 -- great board -- and an Original Sin 152 something or other, also pretty good. The fact that I've been on so few in between is testament to my lack of time on the mountain. I've been putting my $$$ into surfboards, wetsuits (need lots of them in frigid New England in winter), and uh, beer? At Mount Snow, I tried friend's or demo'd Morrow T-Rex (Todd Richards pro model), K2 Dart (cheap rental, but not bad); rode Burton Twin 52 (my own until stolen over Christmas vacation :-(; and a couple others, I forget. Again, not pitching any one company, I like something about all the boards I've ridden (almost...) but I don't like to rash someone's handiwork if it appears they've put effort into it and care. I really, really like the Santa Cruz -- the riding (I can get big air off natural hits, carve super fast, top-notch construction, etc. -- it's a dream board for me). They make great skate decks, too. I'd like to get one of the new Burton's this year...as usual, sick stuff! Pray for snow! -jw |

I've been on a couple of trips with skiers or mixed groups recently, and it's completely unremarkable - no one cares whether you're on one plank or two. Come winter, we'll get the "is this board good for me" posts, which can't be answered in the FAQ, and only get a discussion if a couple of the regulars have tried it. Hardly an exhaustive test though. Pretty much the same for me. I've got my gear, I know what I like, so there's less stuff to talk about here. What would be useful would be conversations on places to go, etc, but as most of the members of this group are based in the US (and, it seems to me, most US riders just go to their local hill), that's not so handy for a world wide perspective. I use rec.skiiing.resorts.europe for a lot of that sort of thing now. -- Champ neal at champ dot org dot uk |
