Summer sports: bog snorkelling
I'm proud to announce that I came second in the ladies' class at this
year's World Bog Snorkelling Championships, held at Llanwrtyd Wells in mid-Wales. The winner was a local girl much younger than me (in fact she also won the junior class). This means I'm officially the second-fastest female bog snorkeller in the world! Full results on www.green-events.co.uk by tomorrow. Thanks to the drought this year's bog was shallower than normal, but there was a variety of wildlife for the spectators to watch during breaks in the action - tadpoles, various beetles, small fish etc. Bog snorkelling cannot be seen as a sport still in its infancy, since this was the 18th World Championship, and there were entries from Ireland, France, New Zealand and the USA, plus a strong contingent from Australia accompanied by a journalist and a Channel 7 TV crew. [The TV crew didn't recognise me as one of the cyclists who'd ridden into town several times over for them on Saturday. Each time we did it, they asked us to do it again a bit further back along the road, as they'd noticed it was even prettier there!] Apparently the Australian public loves Llanwrtyd Wells for its quaintness and wetness. One competitor arrived with a pair of (ob)ski poles to push himself along the bottom of the bog. This was a style still in its infancy, and beset with teething problems; perhaps his poles were too long for the reduced depth of bog. Especially deserving of a mention was the chap who'd apparently forgotten his trunks - undaunted, he swam anyway, wearing only his number card held in place by a cord: he was very careful getting in and out in case it slipped! This is a growing sport, but a friendly one, with enthusiasts from its early days on hand to encourage the newcomers and youngsters, and to entertain with synchronised bog snorkelling and Irish team songs. -- Sue ];( |

Oh. That kind of "bog". Had me scared for a minute, there. bw |
