Walking boots are the best option, just make sure you wash any salt off
them when you get home as it can't be any good for the leather in the
long term.

Hiking boots are very good for walking around the resort, the only
problem if they are very heavy is your luggage allowance may be
streched (at least you don't have to get ski boots in as well). If
you are struggling tokeep in your weight allowance I would wear them
when you travel, you can take them off whle in the plane and will come
in handy if it is a bit of a walk to your accomodation from where the
bus stops (sometimes the case with on the piste chalets)

Default newbie question re snow boots

They are a hassle to take off while going through airport security. Got
reminded the hard way in Jackson Hole last year.

Still worth doing, though - I've never been stopped in Europe.
