Not too sure on location. I know Gear West rented a location in that area
for Birkie weekend in 2002 and did real well (but they ****ed off the other
shops in the area)

As far as advertising goes, I would try to get info out through
skinnyski.com. Everyone in the midwest looks at that site religously
throughout the winter and especially around Birkie time. Many will be
looking at it several times a day.

Hope that helps.

OK all you Midwesterners - in fact, any of you Birkie fanatics - I need

some
advice. I'm ashamed to admit that I've never been to the Birkie, so I'm a
little out of my depth trying to make plans for the coming season. I'm
planning to take my mobile stonegrinding setup out to the big show and I'm
curious about a couple of things:

Where should I set-up? I've got an offer for a very easy set-up in Sealy,
right on the road from Cable to Hayward and very near the 00 crossing.

Would
I be insane not to be set-up near the expo? I wouldn't really have the
ability to staff a booth in the expo in any case, so it's mostly a

question
of proximity.

Aside from location my main concern is with getting word out in advance. I
have yet to enquire about advertising in the Birch Scroll, but I imagine
that would be smart. Any other ideas?

If you guys help get me straightened out I'll cut you some good deals on
fast skis when the time comes.

thanks -
Zach

I've only been to two Birkies, but I've got the hang of it. There is
the expo @ the Telemark lodge @ the Cable end. Mostly this is a retail
deal meaning vendors are selling ski products, but not services such
as yours. The services are being offered out of the shops. The shops
are concentrated in Hayward, and in a couple pockets between Cable &
Hayward. If you have an offer to get in with any one of those shops,
whether or not they are near the turnoff @ the "00" crossing, that
would be fine. The 00 crossing is simply a trailhead parking lot with
no shops. Out by the main drag (near the intersection of "main drag" &
00) there are some shops.

That would be Highway 63, which goes from Hayward to Cable. At the
intersection of 63 and OO there is a ski shop, a restaurant/bar and
a couple other businesses. That route (63) gets plenty of traffic during
Birkie week because its the main way people get to Cable for bib pickup,
etc.

Between the registration & overall extravaganza @ Telemark, and the
Elite Sprints downtown Hayward, there is plenty of reason for all the
skiers to be transiting between the two, and thus, by all the shops,
in the days before the race.

Riverbrook has a shop at Seeley which does stone grinding. Take that info for
what its worth. Gear West rented a small building in Cable on Hwy 63 in 2002.
It had good parking and easy access (virtually everyone has to pass there to get
the registration material at Telemark). If you could locate there it would be a
good spot I would think. No one stone grinds at Telemark IIRC so maybe the folks
there could set you up with some space.
