Default Anybody know of 4 wheel drive hire Munich

Travelling to Austria in Febraury for weeks skiing in Schladming. Thought of
hiring a 4 wheel drive- last year same week was very bad getting to
Kiztbuhl. Anybody know of anywhere in airport vicinity that has reasonable
rates to ensure me & the family make it witout sitting in a metre of snow
(yes, yeah - I know, I'll be lucky....)

That's sounds totally overboard, just make sure it's got winter tyres,
which it almost certainly will have anyway. I've no idea if you
regularly drive 4wd in snow either so you might not want to assume
just having 4wd is some sort of magic wand or that it doesn't require
some practice.

And a set of chains.

I have often driven past 4wds stuck in the snow, whilst I coped fine
with chains on front or rear wheel drive cars (but front is easier). I
even once had to rescue a friend who got his Land Rover stuck, he was
pulled out by a Suzuki Vitara, much to his shame. He had to buy us a
case of beers to buy our silence... well I kept quiet for 12 years, I
think thats fair enough.

Many 4wd owners don't understand how they work and also don't
understand that UK-spec off-road tyres are not very good in snow. My
'ski-mobile' is a Volvo V70 XC (AWD). Since I've had proper winter
tyres I've _never_ needed to fit chains. I always carry them anyway,
like.

Snow tyres *rock*.

From Munich airport to Schladming you are on the motorway, except for the
last 20km or so. A four-wheel drive is not so important. Choose a car with
front-wheel drive. Be sure the car has snow tyres and hire a pair of snow
chains. Chains are much more important, but you probably will not need them
as long as you stay on a motorway.

What about flying to Salzburg instead of Munich? It is only some 100 km from
Salzburg to Schladming. Moreover, Schladming has a train station and all
fast trains stop there. Check the timetable of Austrian Rail, www.oebb.at

Snow-over-asphalt = chains. Preferably on narrow tires.

You need to drop through the snow to the asphalt, or clear snow from
under the tire with the chain. Front wheel drive or rear wheel drive
is fine.

Snow-over-snow = telephone Dick Cepek.

Better still telephone Air Zermatt.

I had a couple of friends stranded in Grindelwald during the huge dump
and white-out of some seven years back (?) when many resorts were
cut-off and stranded tourists were being helicoptered out. A plan to
reach them to 'rescue' them came to nought as the logistical chaos
stretched for grid-squares around.

Try and book a '58 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz and tell them to take
the top off as you will not be needing it.This way it will dump 4
meters just as you try and leave the airport.
