Default Any statistics on resort Closures ?

Hi

Recently we were in the pyrenees there were two days when two of the local
resorts were closed (because of high winds). Others were open locally.
I gather that Andorra suffered similarly.

A friend (who mainly skis the Alps I think) expressed surprise and said that
they had never suffered a resort closure. I wondered whether there was a
reference source anywhere that stored comparative info.

Its a matter of curiousity really - not of massive importance.

Thanks in advance.

I think maybe in the really big resorts you would find it rare for them to
close the whole place down.. I have never experienced or heard of a full
closure of a big resort in the Alps for this type of reason.. however,
plenty of times I wasn't able to go up high because of winds..

No idea, but they closed Bareges for a whole day while we were there in
February. Massive snowfalls, and then a slight earthquake which
triggered three (count 'em!) avalanches, the nearest one about 300 yards
from our hotel.

They closed the resort while they assessed the avalanche damage (and
cleared the avalanches blocking the access road!) and set off explosives
in the crucial areas ets.

They'd lost three people in avalanches or skiing off-piste in dangerous
conditions so far in the season, and were not risking losing any more.

And on 13th Feb this year the only "lift" open in Zermatt was the
Sunnega underground railway feeding the Patrullave chair, all because
of high winds. An entire resort on two runs............

Crans Montana in Switzerland, suffered a complete resort closure on
13th Feb 2005, due to high winds and severe snow storms. The upside
was awesome conditions when the resort opened the next day.
