Default Backcountry touring in the Lake Tahoe area

I am hoping to spend one day doing some "advanced beginner"
backcountry touring in the Tahoe area next week. Carson Pass to 4th
of July Lake sounds neat -- how easy/difficult is the navigation? Do
I need skins or would my Karhu 10th Mt. work? I will have a friend
with me who needs to rent gear -- can we rent at Kirkwood? (Basically
we will be staying at S. Lake Tahoe resort-skiing for a few days, head
into the backcountry on our last day and then driving back to So. CA)

Suggestions for alternatives will be great too!
(Previous experience: Mammoth area, Old Man's Bowl behind Convict
Lake, Little Lakes Valley)

Thanks!

Alfred

Carson Pass to Winnemucca Lake and Roud Top Lake is a nice ski. Its not
difficult and the route is pretty obvious. At Winnemucca Lake, there is
a great slope for telemarking. 'bout twisted my left leg off there once
thinking I was much, much better than I was! No need for skins if you
are just heading to Winnimucca and Round Top.

I would advise against skiing to 4th of July Lake. The ski from Round
Top Lake is very steep going in and probably very hard coming back out.
Its a 1000 ft change in elevation in about 8/10 of a mile. I'd advise
skins for the trip out of 4th of July.

Another nice ski is north from Carson Pass toward the Meiss Country.
Also easy to follow and not too difficult. Once yu get to the pass
about a mile from Carson Pass, there are countless routes to pick.

Check with Sorensens Resort. It on the web though I don't know its
URL. They might rent skis. Also easier to rent in South Lake Tahoe
because Kirkwood is about an hour round trip out of the way.

The backcountry in Truckee and Tahoe has a on-line where to go web
page that is interesting (many with descriptions, some with pics):

http://www.thebackcountry.net/backskiing/wheretogo.htm

A list of tours all around Lake Tahoe is on my web page at

http://www-ee.stanford.edu/~siegman/...i_touring.html

Not updated for several years, and most of them are novice level (as
befits my skills) but going in on the Angora Lake Trail and extending it
a ways, or Cathedral Lake and Tallac, could get interesting and save the
driving down to Carson Pass.
