Speaking of California, Huell Howser passed on a few days ago, so in

This is weird. Guy's purely a Southern Cal guy, and the name doesn't
resonate, but when I look at that video I know the guy. He must have
been all over the LA tube for me to catch him during those few visits
south that I'll admit to.

Although I will say I prefer the version of the song sending everybody
back where they belong - east.

Howser's odd narrative style could be grating to listen to, but his
series on the California missions appeared over and over on public
television. Eventually he created other series (California Gold, On
the Road with HH, California Green, etc) where he and his cameraman
tried to visit every point of interest in the state, including a hike
to the California-Nevada-Oregon border point.

No thanks the phrase was: Go west my son. We have enough people and nut
cases.

Getting my skis ready heading to Tuxedo as soon as kid gets out of
school and try to miss traffic.

Kewl. I skied Crystal yesterday. Bluebird. Killer views. And you ski a **** mountain in crappy conditions.

Except for Snow Forest I've gone to all the local places I know about at

Baldy is nice when the snow conditions are just right - defined as
open down to the parking lot, but no chain restrictions on the way
up. I have been there in those conditions twice in 40+ years.

Once. Not much open at the top. The long dirt-road 'run' is
ridiculous. OTOH, the mound of frozen crap in the porta-potty was
living proof that water (and associated components) expands when it
freezes. I wish I'd had my camera.

My kids were bored with Snow Valley before noon of the day we went
there. The only highlight was being dumped off a chairlift by a
clueless operator.

That may have been the first place I ever went. I didn't make any
terrible mistakes because I read the instructions first :-)

Bear Mt. has the highest and best runs in Southern California, but
don't go on a weekend.

I should really give it a shot. Really. One of these days... Maybe
take the ride over on our lunch break tomorrow... Maybe...

Gawd, you once again make me so glad that I don't live in CA.

We are over 200" of snowfall for the year and I have paid off my pass
a couple of times over already.

OTOH, you have to deal with shoveling your sidewalks and freezing pipes.

Oh, BTW how did a liftie dump you off a chair? Our lifties can't/don't
do that usualy so I am curious. I have done it to myself when I
turned to say something to the cute girl bumping chairs and got
careless with a ski tip in a bgi snow year but they have never done
it TO me so the idea itrigues me.

If it was Mountain High I'd believe it was deliberate. Even the ski
patrol people are surly.

Sorry, but I am really glad that I live in a place that has skiing
that I don't have to bitch about. Nearly ever. And that I get to enjoy
it.

Maybe some of us enjoy bitching. A little. Sometimes...

Stevens Pass has only had 298" so far this season, but we're getting by OK too.
Being a skier in Southern CA must be rough.

Only if we get there before it's groomed :-) No idea how much they get
in the mountains, but as long as they claim to have two feet of snow on
the ground it's OK. Now they say they have three feet. WOO-HOO!

I shouldn't complain. It's been pretty cold for the last week, but we
haven't had to turn the heat on for decades. AC in the summer is very
different, though.

I used to watch his programs with my mom. His enthusiasm was
infectious, but his insistence on wasting wonderful places by asking
stupid questions of tourists and residents was maddening.

What's "AC"?
