I am planning to ski in Canada in late Jan & early Feb 2004. First
time skiing outside Australia so I need some local knowledge. We are
planning on a week in Whistler (Mid Feb) with the last week in Jan at
Sun Peaks or Big White. Would you rate one better than the other or
suggest another in BC/ Alberta? We like to ski blue runs and throw in
a few blacks each day. And mainly looking to have a unique snow
holiday. I also like to do some XC on trails in/out of the resorts.

thanks

Remember.. if you have never been out of Australia before, what Canadians
(and europeans) class as green runs would be equivilant to an Australian
blue, and their blues would generally be black in Australia..

It sounds like a great plan. You say "at least a week" for Sun Peaks
and Big White. If that's the case I'd consider a bit of a road trip,
take in these 2 at least, and maybe one other (Silverstar or Apex
maybe). They are all relatively close to each other (can't remember
the distances off hand, but they are no more than 2 hours from each
other).

There are a lot of fantastic resorts further east towards the Rockies,
but these would be more out of your way. I love Red Mountain and
Whitewater, but these are about 5 or 6 hours drive from the Big White
area. Fernie is my next trip and that has an excellent reputation, but
that is even further out of your way.

I'd leave the resorts of the Rockies for another trip, there is so
much to do there you'd never make it back to Whistler for February:-)

My favorite place is Marmot Basin, in Jasper. No lift lines, best scenery in
Canada, right in Jasper National Park. 1/2 above the treeline, and 1/2
below. Fantatic view from atop the knob. Not a big choice of night life, but
not dull either.
