Default Monterosa - where to stay?

Myself + 3 others are thinking about heading to the Monterosa area in
N. Italy over New Year. Can anyone recommend where would be a good
base? Champoluc, Gressonay or Alagna? Any ideas for hotels or self
catering also appreciated!

It looks like the off piste in the area (and Alagna in particular) is
pretty good, can anyone confirm or deny this? Are there many (any)
English speaking guides (or failing that German or French speaking -
sadly no one in the group has any Italian)?

Thanks in advance!
Steve

I've been twice and stayed both times in Gressoney. Sometimes high winds
close the link up from Alagna (as happened to us on both trips) so
staying in Gressoney still allowed us to ski when we would have been
stuck in Alagna.

This hotel is owned by the Gressoney guide leader who speaks very good
english as do a number of his guides. And yes the off piste is good! Its
around 30 seconds walk to the lift from here
