Default Colorado Spring family seeks inexpensive ski lodging

Howdy,

Ya' just can't start planning these things too soon. Mom and Dad and two
boys (9 & 3) new to Colorado Springs are seeking inexpensive weekend and
holiday lodging near one of the local ski areas. We haven't settled on any
one resort yet, 'tho Breckenridge is about the right distance from home and
I've hiked around there and it seems like our kind of terrain. We love
Crested Butte (from back in the child-less, ski bumming days) but it's kind
of far for weekends. Anyway, we're hoping to find dorm style lodging for our
brood. Maybe a club-owned house? I really don't know what's out there and
would appreciate any leads.

TIA
Hugh

Yeah, CB is farther than B'ridge, but it's gonna be way less crowded. For
lodging choices there's a Hostel in Crested Butte, a condo unit at San Moritz is
pretty reasonable, and Gunnison 30 easy miles away has a wide range of motels to
choose from.. The new owners are hard at work making the ski area even better
and it shows.

And I think I said, it's way less crowded.

There is a hostel in Silverthorne/Dillon. If you live in CO SPrgs, it
is only a short drive to Breck or Keystone or Loveland. Why not save
the money and go to a good restaurant in one of those locations and
then drive home later after the crowds are done going down I70/I25 or
over Hoosier Pass? It is expensive enough to ski without adding
lodging when you are so close to home.

IIRC it's not all that close - a couple of hours driving, realistically.
That's enough to make it an excursion which changes the equation.

IMO, the whole balance changes when you have a regular place to stay in
ski country, be it a shared ski-house, your own cabin, or even a rented
room. Then skiing becomes a regular daily habit instead of an exception
to daily live; at least it worked that way for me.

Of course, if regular accomodation is not in the cards, your suggestion
is also good.

There are cheap motels in Idaho Springs, which put you close to Winter Park and
Summit County.

TCS (The Colorado Skier)
Loveland opens in about 2 months.
