Default CCC Ski Trails

Hi Guys:

A question was asked: “Which CCC trails were incorporated into commercial ski
areas, and which ones were lost?” My answers follow, but first, two
comments:

1) Not all CCC trails needed commercial ski areas to survive. Some are
maintained by skiers - sort of “social trails”.

2) There were other trails built in the 30’s, but not by the CCC. The
“Thunderbolt Trail” on Mt. Greylock in western Mass. comes to mind.

SHERBURNE Trail on Mt. Washington. Designed by Charles Proctor and built by
the CCC. Still survives in it’s original form and still in heavy use. Not at
a commercial ski area.

WILDCAT - Runs from the top of Wildcat Mtn down to Jackson. The top half of
the trail became the (what else) “Wildcat” run at Wildcat ski area. The bottom
half is still skiable (out of bounds).

Stowe - BRUCE and TEARDROP trails - probably no longer in use. NOSEDIVE, LORD,
and MERRILL trails - built by the CCC under the direction of Charlie Lord and
Perry Merrill. Now part of the Mt. Mansfield ski area.

Cannon Mtn - TUCKER BROOK Trail, built by the CCC and still in use as a social
trail. RICHARD TAFT - built as a downhill racing trail in 1929 by the folks
from Peckett’s at Sugar Hill. The CCC didn’t exist until 1932, but some
sources say that they worked on the trail.

Waterville Valley - TECUMSEH Trail, built as a racing trail in the 30’s, but
not by the CCC. Now surrounded by the ski area - which opened in 1966.

Gunstock - The BELKNAP ski area (now Gunstock) was built by the WPA in the
late 30’s.

Well, that’s it for two hours of research. BTW, there were also CCC trails in
the west. Another day.

Homework assignment: What was the relationship between the CCC and WPA?

Cheers, TCS (Trivia are us)
