Snowboard rescue
Other thread reminded me of this event:
Couple of days ago found a snowboarder on the backside of the High Traverse; the backside traverse is steep and icy - the wind really scours it. If you lose your edge and start sliding you're going to be severely injured or killed (REALLY!) Even if you know how, have poles, and have practiced, self-arrest is difficult on this stuff. Being a boarder he of course had no poles. Girl died two years ago in similar situation: http://news.rgj.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080204/NEWS18/80204048 This wasn't exactly the same place, but was exactly the same conditions. This idiot had removed his board (because he couldn't traverse well, I imagine) and had therefore no steel edges to work with. He also couldn't put his board back on when questioned. My buddy gave him a pole, and I blocked from below while we baby stepped this idiot out of danger. HIS buddy ignorantly had gone on ahead and calmly and blithely sat waiting without a worry. After we had nursed this guy to safety I mentioned the above referenced boarder death two years ago but I don't think it had any impact. Both of them then entered the Sun Bowl (sideslipping, of course) and relative safety. What is it that makes these fools believe they can safely go where skiers go? Don't they realize their equipment if very limited and not sufficient for many typical conditions easily accomplished on skis? Don't they have any clue of the dangers prevalent in real mountains? Doesn't anyone care enough to teach these fools how to survive serious mountain hazards? (At least the two guys who got lost last month knew how to bivouac in the storm - they survived in good condition.) |
