After the Birkie this year, it seems the key to fast skis is to work
with someone like Zach Caldwell who tests and re-tests waxes and
structure. You can't simply follow the recommendations of the wax
companies because there are more factors involved than temperature and
structure. I know the Germans have been fast the past couple of
seasons on the World Cup. They apparently have put a lot of emphasis
on ski flex/presure distribution.

I think flex refers to amount of pressure needed to close the ski to 0.5
mm or thereabouts, while pressure distribution refers to the way the
camber closes across the ski. The latter is first a matter of ski
design, both between brands and between models of the same brand.
Within brands, there are also issues of quality control that might
affect flex and pressure distribution. That's why good ski shops (and
top racers) say they pick skis to make sure they are matched pairs,
i.e., both parameters match or are very close.

In skating, itī+s everything - and in classic, itīs 100%:-)

BTW could someone explain (in very simple terms) what is the
essential difference between the two terms - and why two skis
with the same flex can have different pressure distribution
patterns?

(OTOH I wasnīt obliged to spend time chatting with the other
skiersīand the volunteers at every service point...)
