2-Step Pendulum Doublepole?
I was skiing with friends yesterday and tended to coast up on folks as
we were touring along. I needed a way to ski that wasn't as fast as the Kick Doublepole. Moreover, we were on an icy backwoods trail. The KDP was often too unstable for the trail, as well as too high of a gear. So I would take a step, pump my poles -- pointing the baskets forward -- then take another step and pole. It let me cruise along in the middle of the pack in a very relaxed way. Of course I didn't do it all the time. I mix my moves with the terrain. Does this move sound familiar to anyone here? Everyone? It was pictured and taught in ski how-to books maybe as late as the 1960's but I haven't seen it since. Yet I find it to be a "must do" move. Is it must-do for you? I also occasionally do a Diagonal Stride Pendulum where you pump a pole and skip a pole plant. Now THAT's a rare move. But fun and handy when it fits. Basically, it seems that in touring, on an uneven/homestyle trail, that one needs more moves than are taught today. Anyone agree? Does any source out there teach real-world techniques other than my OYB. --JP |
