Also, snowboarders will talk with you. I'm not sure that increased snowboarder contact is a plus ... =P No, I believe tele is easier on your knees. Really, I'm serious. Harder on your thighs/quads, but the knee is stronger when flexed. It's anecdotal but I've heard a number of reports from people with bad knees that said when they finally gave tele a try it was easier on the knees than fixed heel. Of course YMMV, but I don't think bum knees are an automatic tele DQ. It may depend on the nature of your knees' crankiness. Maybe I'll check it out some time. Right now, fixed bindings* give my thighs plenty of a workout, and I don't want to try a new style of skiing when I don't really have my first style firmly ingrained. * What does one call "industry-standard" skiing to distinguish it from telemarking? -- monique |

Consider making tele your first style - sounds like a perfect time for you to do that. * What does one call "industry-standard" skiing to distinguish it from telemarking? Training. Fixed-heel bindings are properly referred to as training bindings, or sometimes colloquially as "cheaters." Bob |

I have no doubt that athletics and endurance will help me a ton, but I don't know that they'll get me out of my habit of sliding my tails rather than turning properly ... I like a little wiggle in my tail ... FWIW re lessons, the wife had a nice lesson at Solitude, whilst I was fooling around up on the ridge. Also, FWIW re destination, since it costs no more to get to SLC (and is probably cheaper) than getting to resorts in Collyrada, and since you have a possible crashsite in SLC area, and since the snow's invariably better than Collyrada (and deeper and steeper), and since you have an open invite from der Klaus, I'd can the whole Collyrada idea in a flash. Go for the gusto. |

This raises a question from me. My wife wants to do one of those women's weekend things. Anyone (or their wives) have experience with these here in Colorado? I'd like to give her that for Xmas... Not in Col., but out in the real west, the wife did a woman's clinic awhile back. She enjoyed it emmensely, it helped her skiing jump several levels, and helped her to tougher terrain. She had torn her ACL, was skiing without repair (still skis without repair) and was feeling tentitive. Comaraderie is a big part of the program ... |
