'Cause it sounds more impressive that way. The North American Series
just doesn't have the same ring.

How about "Pacific Rim/Hispanic Series?"

Don't forget that there are also no other teams anywhere else in the
world that can compete. Our Basketball championships are called

"World
Championships" too. You've seen what happens when the rest of the

world
plays our basketball players. At this point I'd say that "World

Series"
is legit. I don't care if the, Scottish for example, want to call

their
log tossing thing a world championship. It probably would be if

they're
the only ones tossing logs.

Granted, Baseball is mostly a US sport, but I'd be interested in

seeing
a series between the winner of the World Series and the Japanese
champion. I don't think the result would be a foregone conclusion.

I don't think it would be as one sided as basketball has turned out to
be but I would bet lot's on the USAians.

To take another tack, in most sports that have a World Cup countries
field a national team of players from that country, even if those
players play professionally for a team outside their country of

origin.
If we did it that way, you'd probably see the Hondouran team in the
finals. Maybe against the Cubans.

At least one of the players in the current World Series are scheduled to
testify before some sort of Senate committee about these. They talked
about it a little bit last night. There were something on the order of
20 players in the 4 major US professional sports set to testify. They
mentioned some from Baseball and Football but I don't know who.

My wife worked with American soldiers stationed in Germany. When they
talked about "Going back to the World" they meant the United States. That
does not include Canada.

While we are off topic on the World Series, how about the National Hockey
League? There are teams from both Canada and the US so which Nation does
the name refer to?

What about World Championship Cricket or Rugby? There are never any
American teams included so how can it be World Championship?

Australia is welcome to host the World Championship for Australian Rules
Football if they want. No one else is insane enough to participate.
(Unless South Africa or New Zealand get a little carried away.)

Just saw a comedian (Izzard?) on Charlie Rose last night doing a
routine that went something like: "America is going to win the world
series
again this year. In fact, America has won every world series for
over a century. What an amazing record"

I'll forgive the british comedian for forgetting toronto's WS victory

Well I'm British too, and I dont even know what a World Series is,
but I gather its not a skiing event.
Hope you'll forgive me too.
Mike

Its funny about the use of the word World.
In Europe the World News on TV covers news from around the world.
Last time we stayed in Toronto we picked up Buffalo TV and at
the end of the news reports they said and now for the World News
and that gave the 'local' news from outside of Buffalo.
As an example, on my local TV station I've just seen a report on the
tragic fires fanned by Santa Anna.

er, the current World Cup rugby is being held, in Australia. The US AND
Canada have sent teams. Also, Argentine AND Uruguay are competing. No
Scandinavians though. Teams from everywhere but there.
The Cricket world cup was less eclectic. If the north americans want to
enter, I think they can. The Dutch had a team in this time, from memory.

last night there was a Test match played between Australia and Ireland, of a
modified version of Aussie Rules crossed with Gaelic Football. I think we
won that, too.

Sadly for world rugby, today we beat Namibia, 139-0

Ouch, I believe and so do Mexicans that Mexico is in North America.

I think your compatriots *currently* playing in the Rugby World Cup
might be a little aggrieved to hear you say that.

There are teams from every continent involved in that, so I think it
can genuinely be described as a *world* cup.

And it isn't the fault of the Cricket authorities if the US decides
not to enter a team in that.

Yes.

That is what he meant. It can't be called the North American Series
because not all the countries in North America are represented.
