Beckie Scott to be presented with gold medal
from
http://www.cbc.ca/stories/2004/06/25/canada/scott040625 Beckie Scott to be presented with gold medal Last Updated Fri, 25 Jun 2004 9:23:39 VANCOUVER - Canadian cross-country skier Beckie Scott will receive a gold medal Friday - more than two years after the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics. Scott will accept her medal during a ceremony at the Vancouver Art Gallery. Charmaine Crooks, a former Canadian track star and current International Olympic Committee member, will present Scott with the gold. The ceremony follows a December ruling by the Court of Arbitration for Sport that Scott, who initially took the bronze, should be upgraded to gold. By initially winning the bronze, Scott, 29, from Vermilion, Alta., became the first North American woman to win a cross-country Olympic medal. At the Games, Russian Olga Danilova won the gold while compatriot Larissa Lazutina took the silver in the five-kilometre pursuit. But in another race, the Russians tested positive for darbepoetin, a performance-enhancing substance. The IOC allowed the two to keep their medals in the five-kilometre pursuit because they had not failed drug tests for that race. But Lazutina lost the silver medal and others she won at the Games after it was learned she had tested positive for blood doping at World Cup races prior to the Games. Testing positive meant she was ineligible to compete in the Olympics. Scott was upgraded to a silver, but Danilova kept the gold. The Canadian Olympic Committee took the case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Switzerland. The COC argued that Danilova should also lose her medal because she failed a drug test at the Olympics, even if it wasn't for the five-kilometre race. The COC cited the Olympic Charter which says any athlete caught cheating at the Olympics should be stripped of all of their medals. The Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled that Scott should get the gold. Written by CBC News Online staff |

Did Beckie get her medal at a 'suitable' ceremony and were the politicians speeches worthy of the proceedings. I mean, did anybody get the chance to tell it like it is. |

Beckie Scott to be presented with gold medal
She could have had the greatest medal presentation in the world with
the Prime Minister of Canada, the FIS Chief, IOC head etc... It doesn't matter... The biggest ceremony in the world would still pale in comparison to getting the medal at the Olympic Games. She got screwed by Larissa Lazutina and Olga Danilova. I hope their happy knowing that... For the Euros, that's American slang for; they're a couple of jerks (ed)... Sorry Guys I didnt make my post clear. We were told on this NG that on 18th December 2003 the Court of Arbitration ordered the IOC to award Beckie Scott a Gold Medal by 15th March 2004. That sparked a lot of discussion here. But she didnt get it. In my opinion that medal could and should have been awarded to Beckie at any of the award ceremonies at the late season World Cup events, particularly the ones where she did so well. It would have been so simple, she would have received her medal before her peers, in front of her team and her fans and all the skiers worldwide seeing it on TV. Even more important to me she would have received her medal in front of the Managers of the disgraced nations. How joyful to step off the podium and to wave your medal in front of someones face. My post should have said I'm so happy she finally got the medal at a proper city centre presentation and from a national IOC member. Mike |
